PhD Stipends in Mathematics (17-17013)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Mathematical Sciences, a number of PhD stipends and integrated PhD stipends are open for appointment within the general study programme Mathematics and Physics from 1 September 2017 or soon hereafter (Integrated PhD stipends are open for appointment from 1 September 2017 only).   

Job description

 The topics of the PhD projects will be within one or more of the areas in which research is conducted at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, see http://www.math.aau.dk/

Projects with an interdisciplinary perspective and/or a potential for bringing the research into use for the benefit of the surrounding society are particularly welcome.

The successful applicant will have:
1. A strong background in mathematics and/or mathematical finance and econometrics and/or statistics and probability.
2. Strong computational skills and interest in implementing software solutions.
3.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, preferably in both English and Danish.
4. Provided a project proposal.
5. Experience with project organized work between different areas of science.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years.

Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who have not yet completed a Master’s degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme.

The integrated stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month (SU=The Danish students’ Grant and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 5.903 (2015 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.
 

It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Agreement

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of March 26, 2012 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance current circular on the employment structure at Danish Universities.
