The PhD project aims at investigating and demonstrating how circular procurement can be implemented in different types of procurement situations. Procurement is currently changing from an operational function focused on acquiring goods and services in compliance with the relevant regulations towards a much strategic initiative that can help achieve social, economic and environmental goals. These strategic objectives manifest themselves in the form of policy instruments such as Green Public Procurement (GPP), Public Procurement for Innovation (PPI) or Socially Responsible Public Procurement (SRPP) (European Commission 2017b). The PhD will investigate and document a number of cases with special attention to how circular criteria can become part of the requirements to products and services; and especially how the system oriented focus in circular economy can be integrated in procurement practices that traditionally have concentrated on product criteria.

Requirements

The PhD stipend(s) are for a period of three years. The stipend(s) are open for candidates with a relevant master of science degree in environmental engineering, environmental management and sustainability science or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates, who can document relevant experience within circular economy, business models, recycling and waste management.

Experience of doing research in collaboration with enterprises, public institutions and other stakeholders is also an advantage. Furthermore, a good command of English and Danish is a necessary requirement. It can be expected that most written materials from the project partners will be in Danish.

It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
