Postdoc position in LCA database development

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, a position as postdoc in LCA database development is open for appointment from May 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 32 months, with a possibility of extension. The Department of Planning conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international, as well as administrative dimensions.

Job description

The postdoc is part of a strategic investment in research capacity in database development. The research will be done in cooperation with staff from the LCA-group within the research group Danish Centre for Environmental Assessment (DCEA) at Department for Planning. 

We aim at developing a platform for the next generation LCA database, and the postdoc will participate in the early phase research. This project will involve cooperation with researchers with expertise in web-technologies and database technologies, as well as university internal and external partners. The project are based on expertise that over the last 10 years have been concentrated with employees at DCEA (The Danish Center for Environmental Assessment), based on participation as technical leaders of several large EU projects in this area, in cooperation with the local consultancy company 2.-0 LCA consultants. Based on existing multi-regional input-output databases, such as EXIOBASE (www.exiobase.eu) and cooperating with already initiated open-source initiatives, such as BONSAI (https://github.com/BONSAMURAIS/bonsai/wiki and www.bonsai.uno), the research focus on core technologies for developing the next generation LCA data-infrastructure with data harvesting, open processes for data review, and data quality scoring e.g. using social media technology.

The postdoc will have following tasks, in cooperation with staff from the LCA group:

  • Conduct an extensive literature review on the state of the art of LCA databases
  • Development of exemplary elements e.g. for data hosting and sharing, data harvesting, open review processing
  • Show interest in and ability to conceptually think and co-operate in the field between data science and the LCA framework.
  • Produce papers documenting core technologies
  • Participate in the preparation of research applications to fund the further development 

Required qualifications:

  • PhD degree in environmental engineering, or related field
  • Knowledge of computational framework of LCA and IO
  • Experience managing large datasets;
  • Experience with programming with python, R or matlab is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a drive to create own novel research direction.

The postdoc will join the LCA group at the Danish Centre for Environmental Assessment – DCEA at the Department of Planning, Aalborg University. DCEA is an interdisciplinary and gender-balanced research group working with environmental assessment, its researchers have a variety of backgrounds ranging from environmental science and engineering to economics and sociology, and are skilled in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research, from modelling and data analysis to stakeholder involvement and surveying.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
