Senior Researcher in Microflora Danica

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a 2.5 years position as Senior Researcher in the Microflora Danica project is open for appointment from 01.07.2020 or soon hereafter. The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Biology & Environmental Science. Moreover, one section is located in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one section is situated in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The position is located within the Section of Biotechnology with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The Senior Researcher position is related to the Microflora Danica project (2019-2022) funded by the Poul Due Jensen foundation and lead by Prof. MSO Mads Albertsen and Prof. Per H. Nielsen. The ambitious project aims to make the first comprehensive catalogue of microbial communities across Denmark.

The Senior Researcher will be responsible for developing and implementing state-of-the-art sequencing technologies at large-scale to comprehensively investigate microbial communities in 10,000 samples from across Denmark. Furthermore, the Senior Researcher will be responsible for coordination of international collaborations and co-supervise PhD students and Post Docs within the technical part of the project. The Senior Researcher position is expected to ensure that state-of-the-art the sequencing workflows and technologies developed at the Department can be implemented as part of the Departments research-based public sector consultancy.

The Senior Researcher will be part of Center for Microbial Communities that has approx. 40 scientist working with structure and function of microbial communities, primarily related to environmental biotechnology. The Center has state of the art equipment within DNA sequencing (Illumina MiSeq & HiSeq and Oxford Nanopore MinION & PromethION), proteomics, metabolomics and advanced microscopy.

We are looking for a scientist with strong background in molecular microbial ecology, hands-on experience with both Illumina and Nanopore sequencing method development, a proven track-record of publishing and project managing. Qualification requirements: 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position.
  • References/recommendations.
  • Personal data.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
