Professor in Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning one or more positions as Professor in Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education at the Aalborg Centre for Problem Based Learning in Engineering, Science and Sustainability under the auspices of UNESCO (the Aalborg PBL Centre) are open for appointment from 1 November 2020 or soon thereafter.The position will be based in Aalborg. The Aalborg PBL Centre is a core actor in this development and will have responsibilities for research and contribution to development of the Aalborg PBL models. The Aalborg PBL Centre is an interdisciplinary organisation that facilitates bridge-building between disciplines and educational sciences. Furthermore, the Aalborg PBL Centre aims to enhance the international leadership in the transition to more innovative and student-centred approaches in engineering and science education and intends to increase the international research collaboration and outreach activities such as international consultancy and training for academic staff. The Aalborg PBL Centre is located at the Department of Planning which conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social-sciences aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international and educational dimensions.

Job description

The main research area will be within the field of Problem Based Learning (PBL) in engineering and science education in a higher education perspective. The position(s) will be at the Aalborg PBL Centre. The professor will be working in and co-managing an interdisciplinary team of researchers, who is committed to the vision and mission of the Centre and who works in a broader STEM perspective (http://www.ucpbl.net/about/vision-mission/).

The professor is required to further develop the research and strategies for teaching and outreach activities of the Aalborg PBL Centre. This particularly includes further development of the academic field as well as establishment of external funding of research and relevant activities in collaboration with the rest of the group.

The applicants should demonstrate research experience within the field of PBL in engineering and science in higher education related to one or more of the following areas:

  • Digitalised learning and the role of emerging technologies
  • Management of curriculum change in engineering and science institutions
  • PBL competences and professional practice

Teaching will be related to PBL including PhD supervision and PhD courses, development of courses, workshops and consultancy offered at all Engineering and Science programmes at Aalborg University at different levels of study, as well as staff training internally at AAU and externally in the Master of Problem Based Learning, the Aalborg Centre certificate programme or in tailor made training courses by request. Teaching experience from a PBL environment is an advantage.

Qualification requirements:
The successful applicant can demonstrate a documented high level of original scientific production at an international level, including proven further development of the research area in question. An assessment of the candidate’s undertaking of research management and/or other possible management functions will also be taken into account. In addition the applicant is expected to have the qualifications required for undertaking teaching responsibilities. Special contributions to and development of educational and teaching related areas will be considered in the overall assessment.

Agreement

Appointment and salary acc. to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of professional Associations (AC) on Academics in the State. Employment as Professor is in accordance with a classified position on scale 37. In addition, a pensionable increment will be given.
