Associate Professor in Control and Automation of Engineering Systems in Buildings and District Energy Networks (2020-224- 03158)

<p>At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of BUILD environment in Copenhagen a position as Associate Professor in Control and Automation of engineering systems in buildings and district energy networks is open for appointment from March 1, 2021 or soon hereafter.</p>

Job description

The work will mainly be focused on developing control strategies for energy efficient control of HVAC systems in buildings and district heating networks. The candidate will be required to contribute to further development of the department’s expertise in control engineering for HVAC systems, air distribution systems and district heating applications, both theoretically and through experimental demonstrations. The candidate should have knowledge and expertise in HVAC systems and indoor climate requirements. The candidate should take a leading role to develop innovative control solutions, which facilitate the evolution of current buildings towards smart buildings. The candidate should contribute to generation of new projects within the department’s application domain. The position will involve teaching duties and supervision of master and/or PhD students.


Build is looking for a Associate Professor with a background in control theory and its application in HVAC systems who

  • hold a PhD degree in Control Engineering
  • has at least 5 years research experience within control of HVAC systems, air distribution systems and indoor climate requirements
  • has hands-on experience in field/laboratory measurements within HVAC systems applications
  • has programming skills e.g. in Matlab and/or python
  • has data analysis and data-driven control skills
  • has experience within Smart Grid and demand response programs
  • has solid experience in writing project proposal for national and international funds, in the fields of control, HVAC systems, Smart Grid, hospital ventilation etc.
  • has teaching experience within the field of building engineering systems
  • working with industrial programmable controllers (PLCs).
It is also an advantage if the candidate has experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of ventilation systems.

As a person, the candidate should be driven with the ability to work in a team as well as independently and be good at networking. The candidate must have professional skills in English (written and spoken) language.

Qualification requirements: 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

  • Teaching qualifications described in the teaching portfolio.  If this is not enclosed the applicant must include an explanation for its absence.
