Associate Professor in Sustainable Transition and Valuation

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning at Aalborg University, Copenhagen, a position as Associate Professor in Sustainable Transition and Valuation is open for appointment from December 1, 2021 or soon hereafter. The Department of Planning is currently strengthening its teaching and research activities within sustainable transition and valuation. We invite applicants eager to contribute the Department’s vision of developing and sharing knowledge on designerly approaches to the Sustainable Development Goals concerning health and well-being, clean energy, and responsible consumption and production. The Associate Professorship in sustainable transition and valuation will become part of an interdisciplinary research group – Design for Sustainability – that draws on STS, exploring how design approaches and methods can contribute to sustainable change.  The Design for Sustainability research group has a number of focal areas: staging of collaborative design, designing sustainable engineering; circular economy as and by design; valuation studies and the role of expertise in the green transition.  The Department of Planning has about 200 employees at the campuses of Aalborg and Copenhagen. The department provides excellent research and teaching in the field of planning, technology and society in order to create a more sustainable future. We work in an interdisciplinary manner between the technical, natural and social science disciplines, and present a unique basis for studying and proposing solutions for sustainability challenges. Our research creates the foundation for educating the young people of tomorrow, and as part of Aalborg University, the department rests on a socially-engaging and problem-oriented approach. The Department of Planning is also home to the UNESCO Center for Problem-Based Learning. This relationship helps ensure that we create educations aimed at the job market and a society with increasing focus on technology, digitization, sustainability and partnerships for a sustainable transition

Job description

The Design for Sustainability research group invites applicants that can contribute to the area sustainable transition and valuation studies. 

The candidate must have qualifications within areas such as: 

  1. STS economic sociology and market-making
  2. Valuation metrics and social acceptance/resistance dynamics
  3. Controversy mapping and forms of expertise in sustainability transitions

 The position requires applicants that can demonstrate:

  • experience with relevant research in socio-technical approaches to transition and valuation
  • relevant teaching experiences
  • an ability to work in interdisciplinary teams

 Applicants should preferably hold experience in writing research applications and proven ability to attract external funding is desirable.

 The Associate Professor is expected to teach core courses such as markets and valuation, design processes, and transition dynamics in the bachelor and master programs of the engineering education Sustainable Design. The majority of the teaching tasks at the undergraduate levels are in Danish, whereas teaching at the graduate levels may be in English or in Danish. Therefore, you are expected to learn Danish, within a reasonable period of time.

Qualification requirements: 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.

  • Teaching qualifications described in the teaching portfolio.  If this is not enclosed the applicant must include an explanation for its absence.
  • Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations and the like.
  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position.
  • References/recommendations.
  • Personal data.
