Assistant Professor in Danish language.

At the Department of Culture and Global Studies, The Faculty of Humanities, a position as assistant professor within Danish Language is available from 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 4 years.

Job description

The new member of staff will be affiliated with to the research group LangLing – Languages and Linguistics.

The primary tasks of the position will include research and teaching activities within a wide range of areas linked to Danish language disciplines, i.e. rhetoric, argumentation theory, stylistics, language philosophy, language history, sociolinguistics, grammar and phonetics.

In terms of teaching, the position is primarily affiliated with the Bachelor and Master’s programmes in Danish studies. Moreover, teaching within areas such as rhetoric, discourse studies and communication in other degree programmes at the Department of Culture and Global studies may be expected, as well as teaching activities in other degree programmes under the Faculty.

It will be considered an advantage, but not a prerequisite, if applicants have experience with problem-based learning (PBL), which is Aalborg University’s pedagogical model. The new employee will be expected to participate in the ongoing development of  Danish Studies, which includes the upcoming revision of the programme’s linguistic modules.  

In terms of personal qualities, the Assistant Professor is expected to have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain good rapport with researchers of various cultural and political backgrounds.

Daily attendance at the Department is required. In addition, the Assistant Professor must be prepared to participate actively in all aspects of the day-to-day activities at the Department and in the degree programmes. In the assessment of applications, priority will be given to candidates who  

  • document their ability to work with key linguistic disciplines within the subject of Danish
  • possess research qualifications within Danish linguistics
  • document good skills in applying methodologically and theoretically reflective approaches to linguistic issues


Assistant professorship
A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark). 

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee. Applicants may be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.
