One Postdoc position in digital interventions to facilitate social relations among youth with cognitive disabilities

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, a position as postdoc in digital intervention is open for appointment from February 1 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for two years/24 months, with a possibility of extension. The Department of Planning conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development.

Job description

The postdoc position is part of a research project investigating how to facilitate digital social relations among youth (age 13-30) with cognitive disabilities. In short, the research project is referred to as the DiGi-project ( The research is empirical and participatory and conducted in close cooperation with a special school, a youth education school, and a sheltered resident for young adults with special needs. For this reason, it is an advantage if the candidate can communicate in Danish/Scandinavian.

The target group is youth living with cognitive disabilities. This include, among others, diagnoses like learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism and Downs-syndrome. Experience from working with youth and/or people with cognitive disabilities is an advantage but not a requirement. However, it is essential that the candidate is motivated to conduct research with and engage in the digital lifeworld of this target group.

The research will be conducted in cooperation with senior and junior researchers from the research group ‘Techno-Anthropology and Participation’ at Department for Planning (, researchers from Department of Communication and Psychology, as well as international university partners.

We aim at developing theory and strategies for digital social relations among youth with special needs. A PhD student is investigating the young participants’ use and visions for digital social relations. Insights from this research will feed into scenarios for how to facilitate digital social relations. These scenarios will be staged and explored in interventions at each of the participating institutions. The postdoc will be a key person in setting up these digital interventions, collecting data during the interventions, analysing and communicating the results. The interventions do not include development of new applications but will be socio-technical set-ups exploring how digital technologies, selected by the participants in the project, can facilitate social relations among the young participants. Hence, the post doc must have competence in staging digital interventions and analysing digital interaction. Knowledge about socio-technical theory, qualitative methods as well as innovative use of social technology is an advantage.

The postdoc will have following tasks, in cooperation with researchers in the DiGi-project:

  • Design and conduct interventions that explore scenarios for digital social relations among youth with cognitive disabilities in the three participating institutions
  • Collect data and analyse the digital social relations unfolding during the interventions.
  • Participate in communicating the research results through joint papers, reports and web material.

The postdoc will be part of the research group for Techno-Anthropology and Participation (TAPAR) at the Department of Planning, Aalborg University. TAPAR is an interdisciplinary, international and gender-balanced research group. We research existing and emerging technologies from a human-centered, participatory and holistic perspective. Our mission is to contribute to change for the better in technological innovation, design and use. TAPAR researchers work with socio-technical theory and are skilled in participatory design, action research and mixed methods.
