At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience a position as Associate Professor in Medical Protein Science is open for appointment from 1 October 2017 or soon hereafter. The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Biology & Environmental Science, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The position is located within the Section of Biotechnology with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The Section of Biotechnology at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience has a strong interest in molecular and functional characterization of proteins. The position is intended to strengthen the Protein Science research in the Section of Biotechnology, in particular within the field of Medical Biotechnology.

The candidate is expected to build an independent research group and conduct an active program of internationally recognized research, and to engage in cross‐disciplinary research projects and collaboration with colleagues at the Section of Biotechnology within the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Departments across Aalborg University, and other institutions.

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience hosts three sections at the Aalborg campus, within Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology. The Section of Biotechnology houses state of the art equipment for protein production and purification, as well as for biophysical characterization, including Fluorescence, CD and NMR spectroscopy, MALS, DLS, ITC, MST, and mass spectrometry, as well as several platforms for next generation sequencing.

Teaching will be located primarily within the Study Programs for Biotechnology, Chemistry and Biology at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, but may also include other study programs at the University. Subject areas will include protein science, and biotechnology. For a non-Danish speaking candidate, it will be a development goal in the position to be able to teach in Danish on an undergraduate level within 3-5 years.

The position requires extensive experience within the field of protein science. Expertise within several of the following areas are required: protein chemistry, protein structure-function, protein production, protein purification, biophysical characterization of proteins.

The successful candidate must have a track record of relevant excellent scientific research documented through articles in peer-reviewed international journals. Clear evidence of independent research activities and success in obtaining research funding are essential. Documented collaborations with industrial partners will also be considered positively

Qualification requirements:

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. An established record of securing external funding is essential.

Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

Appointment and salary acc. to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of professional Associations (AC) on Academics in the State. Employment as Professor is in accordance with a classified position on scale 37. In addition, a pensionable increment will be given.
