PhD Stipend in mathematical modeling of the acid-base chemistry of blood and its clinical applications (21-17055)

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology, the Respiratory and Critical Care group (rcare), a PhD stipend is available within the general research programme Biomedicial Science and Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 September 2017 or soon hereafter.    

Job description

The Department of Health Science and Technology carries out multidisciplinary research and teaching in the area of health science and technology. The department has more than 250 employees and is responsible for more than 1700 students. More than 100 PhD students are enrolled in the doctoral school affiliated to the department. The department has laboratory facilities for Multichannel EEG and EMG analysis, NMR- and electrical stimulations, ECG-analysis, ultrasound, 3-d movement analysis, respiratory and circulatory examinations, sensory and motor functions analysis, clean room facilities, cell growth, molecular biology etc. for more see: www.hst.aau.dk.  

In 2000 AAU established a new five year master program within biomedical engineering, in 2006 within medicine with industrial specialization, in 2007 within Sports Science and latest in 2010 within medicine. All educations at AAU are based on problem based teaching.

As The Faculty of Medicine wishes PhD positions to enable careers both within and outside the university, the vacant positions are created in such a way that the competences achieved in the position will qualify for both a research career and a career in the commercial and/or public sector. At least a year before the position expires, you will be offered an interview to clarify your future career. 

The rcare group investigates the application of technology in all matters related to respiration, respiratory medicine and critical care medicine. In particular, the focus is on the application of physiological models, built into technological solutions, to solve specific clinical questions or address physiological understanding. The team includes both engineers and medical doctors aiming to create a multi-disciplinary environment where the solution of clinical and physiological problems is at the fore.

This PhD project will focus on clinical and technical problems associated with assessment of the acid-base status of blood. It will focus on the application of the method known as V-TAC, a mathematical modeling approach to calculate the acid-base status of the arterial blood from measurement of venous blood and pulse oximetry. The PhD will involve collaboration with OBI Medical A/S, the commercial producer of V-TAC. The broad focus of this PhD study is:

  • Application of V-TAC in intensive care medicine, looking in to the effects of and possible compensation for anaerobic metabolism and variability of arterial values.
  • Application in departments where blood is transported in pressurized chambers, understanding its effects and include in mathematical model.
  • Application in pediatric medicine, where physiology is different and the models may need tuning to cope with various effects, for instance fetal hemoglobin.
  • Application in home care, where full co-oximetry may not be available. An analysis should be conducted, considering using the current set of models in this setting.

The successful candidate holds a Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, or a Masters degree plus relevant experience or expertise. A high proficiency level in oral and written English is required.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation. 


The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
