At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production at Aalborg University, Aalborg Campus, a position as Assistant Professor in Changeable Manufacturing is available. The position is open for appointment from 01 11 2017 or soon hereafter and for 3 years. Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials' applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Thereby, as an employee at the Department you will become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Job description

Research areas will be in the field of manufacturing systems and related topics from product design to manufacturing, in particular:

  • Changeable, reconfigurable, and flexible manufacturing systems
  • Management of product variety in manufacturing
  • Systems design, engineering design methodologies, and planning of modular manufacturing systems.
  • Product and manufacturing systems design for scalability and convertibility, co-evolution, co-development, and production platform development.
  • Mass customization and personalization.
  • Organizational aspects related to production system design on a strategic and operational level.

 

The assistant professorship includes both research and teaching in these domains. Research will be conducted jointly with colleagues in the Mass Customization group and in close collaboration with external industry and research partners locally, nationally, and internationally.

The successful candidate is a highly motivated, ambitious, outgoing person, who is able to work in international and interdisciplinary research teams. A high degree of interaction with both academic and industrial partners is expected. The successful candidate is expected to contribute actively to ongoing research projects, contribute to the development of new research projects, and actively develop the teaching portfolio of the section.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

  • Creating methodologies and tools for development of mass customization and variety-oriented, responsive, and personalized manufacturing, in particular regarding changeable and reconfigurable manufacturing.
  • Publishing in high ranked peer-reviewed journals and conferences as well as engaging in other forms and levels of research dissemination.
  • Communicating the findings to the public in general and to industrial stakeholders in particular.
  • Active role in developing personal teaching skills and contributing to the further development of specific courses and study programs at the section.

Teaching and supervision will primarily be in connection with the Master programme in Operations and Supply Chain Management, the Master programme in Production, and the Bachelor programme in Global Business Engineering.

Qualification Requirements

The candidate must hold a relevant PhD-degree.  

Applicants are expected to have excellent academic qualifications within:

  • Changeable, reconfigurable, and flexible manufacturing 
  • Management of product variety in manufacturing 
  • Systems design, engineering design methodologies and planning of modular manufacturing systems 
  • Mass customization and related topics.

Furthermore, the successful candidate must have excellent analytical and technical skills, especially knowledge of and interest in industrial issues.

Experience within the following is required:

  • Quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Industrial research collaboration
  • Problem based learning and supervision of problem based learning projects
  • Teaching within operations management, supply chain management, mass customization, production development, manufacturing systems, flexible and reconfigurable manufacturing, and engineering design methodology.

The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).
