One or more PhD Stipends in Ecosystem-based Management in Marine Spatial Planning (20-18003)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, one or more PhD stipends are available within the general study programme "Planning and Development". The stipend is open for appointment from 1 February 2018 or soon thereafter. <p>The Department of Planning conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international as well as administrative dimensions.</p>

Job description

The PhD candidate(s) will be located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Internally within the University, the position(s) will be linked to the research center IFM – Centre for Blue Governance. The aim of the Center is to contribute to an in depth understanding of marine governance structures and processes at sea and in coastal areas and to design and develop (integrated) governance arrangements to govern marine activities and to control their consequences.

The PhD project with the tentative title: “The integration of ecosystem-based management in marine spatial planning”, will contribute to and critically support the integration of ecosystem-based management in marine spatial planning processes and the development of marine spatial plans.

More specifically the PhD project should contribute to an understanding of the enabling and constraining conditions to implement the ecosystem-based approach into the Danish MSP process based on a critical discussion of the approach in general and a comparative analysis of the use of the concept in other countries. The PhD project is expected to contribute by conceptual findings as well as tools for assessing key EBM elements e.g. in form of GIS (geographical information system) or cumulative impacts assessments. 

The preferred candidate(s) have excellent skills in the Danish and English language, a basic knowledge of the Danish planning system and basic skills in GIS, cumulative impacts assessments and marine planning, and high-grade averages and publications related to the topic.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant(s) will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend(s).
