One or more PhD Stipends in Value of Information in Risk Informed Assets Integrity Management (6-18005)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Civil Engineering a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Civil Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from May 1st, 2017.

The position is available for 3 years.

Job description

One or more PhD Stipends in Value of Information in Risk Informed Assets Integrity Management (6-18005)

The project will be carried out at the department of Civil Engineering, Aalborg University in contract for and in close collaboration with the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre DHRTC, also called Centre for Oil and Gas.

As part of the National Strategy on Oil and Gas, the DHRTC research Centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to enable increased recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. As a part of this strategy, the DHRTC undertakes substantial research and development activities with the objective to increase efficiency in assets integrity management for existing offshore facilities. In this context the DHRTC is now initiating research on:

Value of Information in Risk Informed Assets Integrity Management.

Responsibilities and tasks

Based on probabilistic models and methodologies for assets integrity management developed in parallel PhD projects addressing well head systems, static process systems and steel jacket structures, pre-posterior decision analyses shall be formulated, which allow for a quantification of different strategies for collecting additional knowledge of significance for the modeling (or prediction) of the performances of the considered assets.

Strategies for collecting new knowledge will include measurements and monitoring of accelerations and strains, measurements of marine fouling, potential measurements, variations in pressures, temperatures, chemical compositions, corrosion and fatigue deterioration rates, etc. Moreover, through sensitivity analysis of the system performances the model uncertainties contributing most significantly to OPEX shall be identified and potentials for their reduction through targeted information collection by means of measurements, investigations or refined modeling will be assessed.

You may obtain further information from Professor Michael Havbro Faber, Department of Civil Engineering, Phone: +45 5153 7677, email: concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
