Associate Professor in Marine Governance and Coastal Community Development (42257)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Planning, Aalborg University, a position as Associate Professor in Marine Governance and Coastal Community Development is open for appointment from June 1, 2018 or soon hereafter. The Department of Planning (PLAN) conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international as well as administrative dimensions. The Associate Professor will be located in the city of Aalborg, Denmark. Internally within the University, the position will be linked to the research center IFM – Centre for Blue Governance. IFM – Centre for Blue Governance undertakes social scientific research within fisheries, marine governance, and the development of coastal communities and regions, both internationally and nationally. IFM – Centre for Blue Governance collaborates cross-disciplinarily in the department in order to develop sustainable solutions.

Job description

The Associated Professor will do research within marine governance, coastal community development and stakeholder participation. The successful applicant will have a proven track record and documented experience in these areas such that he/she can contribute to the continued development of the research centre’s position as one of the leading research centres investigating the political processes surrounding fisheries/maritime management and development and transition within coastal communities internationally. The position will especially have a strong focus on developing cross-disciplinary and participatory research in Greenland and the Arctic region specifically, and the applicant is expected to contribute with long-term research experience and network among stakeholders and researchers in the Arctic region. 

Teaching responsibilities for the position fall within Techno-anthropology and Geography, but also in other study programmes at the University. The applicants should document research interests and teaching portfolio relevant to these disciplines.

Qualification requirements:

  • Having a Ph.D. degree relevant in a relevant social scientific discipline;
  • Demonstrated research interest in natural resource management in the Arctic
  • Possessing experience in cross-disciplinary and policy-oriented research
  • Documented experience with social scientific methods and mixed methods research
  • Possessing an active network and relationships within societal institutions working with community development, fisheries, marine and natural resource management in Greenland and the Arctic
  • Experience in planning and coordinating educational programmes at the bachelor and master level

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
