At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience a position as Professor with special responsibilities in DNA Sequencing, Applied Bioinformatics and Microbial Ecology is open for appointment from 01.09.2018 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 5 years, The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching within Biotechnology, Biology & Environmental Science, and Chemistry, one section in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The position is located within the Section of Biotechnology with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience is seeking a dynamic, motivated, problem-solving Professor MSO to join our team in Section of Biotechnology. The candidate will be associated with Center for Microbial Communities. The successful applicant will be expected to develop research and lead PhD fellows and undergraduate students at all levels within the area of DNA sequencing technologies and applied bioinformatics, primarily in the field of microbial ecology. The candidate is expected facilitate expansion of the Department accessibility of the high-end sequencing facilities in general.

The successful candidate must have experience in following areas:

DNA sequencing technologies (especially Illumina, and Nanopore), applied bioinformatics and molecular microbial ecology. The candidate needs to have a demonstrated record of publishing peer-reviewed research commensurate with career level, demonstrated experience in student mentoring, teaching and teaching planning, and experience with problem and project based learning. Additionally, evidence of excellent communication skills, both written and oral, a record of competitive grant success commensurate with career level, documentation for ability to work in interdisciplinary teams to conduct transdisciplinary research and outreach activities, demonstrated leadership ability in outreach and/or research and demonstrated knowledge of the application of research techniques applied to the area described above is desired.

A position as Professor with specific responsibilities is temporary with focus on specific projects as well as ordinary professorship duties. The period of employment is three to eight years, a prolongation is possible but cannot exceed eight years in total. The position is normally established for the purpose of appointing particularly talented researchers with the ability to develop a promising academic field at an international level.

At the end of the period, the special resonsibilities are discontinued and the employee in question transfers to a position as associate professor at the university.

Qualification requirements:
The level of qualifications shall correspond to the ordinary positions at the level of Professor however, also the potential of the candidate to further develop the academic fields in question as well as a documented original scientific production shall be taken into consideration. An assessment of the ability of the candidate to undertake the specific projects related to the appointment in question will be particularly emphasised. Furthermore, the candidate will be expected to have the qualifications required for undertaking teaching responsibilities.
