Post doc in smart grid data communication in failure or attack situations

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, WCN section (Wireless Communication Network), a postdoc position within advanced metering infrastructure is available from Oktober 1, 2018 or soon thereafter. The position is open for a period of 3 years.

Job description

An important element for various smart grid concepts is information on the electrical grid such as voltages and power consumption and production. Data related to the grid should be timely accessed and collected to be useful for real-time grid control. The data access should be robust in the sense that failures or poor performing data networks should not influence the operation of a given smart grid functionality.

This post doc position is based on the EU project Net2DG, and will focus on performance analysis of ICT functionality to support smart grid monitoring and control with attention to failure and cyber attack scenarios. Modelling of data network performance and reliability and of grid related information will be done to characterize and assess developed algorithms for mitigation of failures and attacks to the smart grid infrastructure. Design, implementation and test of software is expected as a part of validation of developed concepts.

The work will be carried out in the EU H2020 project, Net2DG. Part of the research and assessment work will include design and execution of tests in an advanced Hardware-In-the-Loop test bed with co-emulation of power-grid elements and of communication. This testbed is hosted at AAU and it will be extended and used for the validation of the monitoring and control functionalities. Part of these functionalities will in addition be assessed in a real field test operation. The work will be carried out in a collaboration with other domain experts, so good inter-disciplinary collaboration skills are required.

The successful candidate should have top marks/ranking, and should document knowledge and experience in stochastic modelling, statistics and practical work with different simulation approaches. Strong coding experience in either C, C++, or Java is expected. A high level of written and spoken English is expected as well.

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Rasmus Olsen, Department of Electronic Systems, phone: + 0045 9940 7533, email: rlo@es.aau.dk concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.
