PhD Stipend in recycling and recovery of Li-ion batteries
Job description
Do you want to be a part of a dynamic research group, who are working on recycling and recovery of Li-ion batteries? And do you see yourself as a team player who is strong in collaboration? If yes, we look forward to reading your application to our PhD Stipend.
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a PhD stipend is available within the general study program. The PhD stipend is open for appointment from 01.08.2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 3 years, and the workplace is in Aalborg.
Your work tasks
The PhD project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) for Thematic research – Independent green research. The project aims to tackle an urgent problem, i.e., the fast-increasing spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to the rapid growth of electrical vehicles. The project will contribute to resource recovery, environmental preservation, and renewable energy technology. This potential will be realized by developing methods for recovering valuable metals (Li, Ni, Co…) from spent LIBs, diminishing the dependence on limited mineral resources. The recovered materials will be reused to prepare new energy storage materials, e.g., cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). The project introduces a novel, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly Co recovering method. The recovered Co will be utilized to synthesize Co-ZIF glasses for fabricating new anodes for LIBs. The other recovered metals will be utilized for synthesizing cathode material for LIBs. The project will be carried out by employing several advanced synthesis methods and characterization tools.
Your competencies
The candidate should have one of the following backgrounds: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry or Materials Science. Experiences in energy storage materials, particularly in Li-ion batteries will be considered as a big advantage. Excellent skills in oral and written English are required. The applicant must be interested in working in an interdisciplinary research environment.
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
