Job description
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, one or more positions as Assistant Professor in Cyber-Physical Systems and Underwater Technology is open for appointment from 1st of August 2025 until 31st of July 2029 (4 years) or soon hereafter.

AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, these positions are in Esbjerg.
The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.
Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.
The positions are offered in relation to the research group "Offshore Drones and Robotics (https://www.energy.aau.dk/research/research-groups/robotics)" and the Assistant Professors will be positioned to the section for “Esbjerg Energy Section”.
Research areas will be within underwater robotics, emphasizing advanced control systems, dynamic simulations, hydrodynamic modeling, and sensor fusion for marine applications. The research aims to develop robotic solutions for inspection, monitoring, and maintenance of subsea structures and offshore infrastructure. Activities will involve integrating sophisticated sensor technologies for enhanced underwater perception and conducting extensive experimental testing in both controlled laboratory environments and realistic field conditions, such as harbor facilities and offshore sites. Primary objectives include refining control algorithms, optimizing sensor performance, and advancing intelligent monitoring methodologies to ensure reliable operation and continuous energy production from offshore installations.
Teaching and supervision of students will primarily be in IT and Cyber Systems (BSc program) and AI and Autonomous Systems (MSc program) with courses such as Cyber-Physical Systems, Probabilistic Robotics and supervision requires knowledge within robotics and software integration (ROS2, Python, C++), but also in other study groups at the University.
The successful candidate must hold a PhD in underwater technology, computer science, robotics or related research fields and demonstrate expertise in some of the following areas:
- Modelling of underwater vehicles, including the impact of hydrodynamic loads
- Sensor integration and assessment of environmental effects on sensor performance
- Control methods for underwater vehicles, encompassing linear and non-linear approaches
- Fault detection and analysis for underwater systems
- Ability to supervise MSc and BSc students
- Collaboration experience with industry partners, particularly within the energy sector
- Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in recognized journals focused on control systems and underwater robotics
- Hands-on experience in experimental development, including hardware development and software implementation across various processor platforms
- Strong English communication skills is mandatory
Applicants must possess the ability to obtain and maintain security clearance level of TIL TJENESTEBRUG (NATO RESTRICTED, RESTREINT UE/EU RESTRICTED) or higher.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
