Job description

The Department of Health Science and Technology at Aalborg University invites applications for a position as tenure track assistant professor within genomic medicine, with a particular focus on monogenic heart diseases. The position is affiliated with the Genomic Medicine research group, which conducts research at the interface of human genomics, phenotypic diversity, and disease biology through the analysis of large-scale population and clinical datasets.

The successful candidate is expected to have a strong research profile within human genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a closely related discipline. The candidate must hold a relevant master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree in a field appropriate to genomic or biomedical research. Applicants are expected to demonstrate an independent and coherent research trajectory aligned with genomic approaches to human disease.

The tenure track assistant professor will contribute to the research activities of the Genomic Medicine research group by applying and developing methods for the analysis of complex genomic and multi-omics datasets. Experience with the integration of different omics layers (such as genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, and related data types) is required, and experience with cardiovascular or monogenic diseases will be considered a significant advantage. The successful candidate is expected to establish and pursue an independent research program and to demonstrate the ability to attract external research funding.

The position includes teaching and supervision responsibilities at both bachelor’s and master’s levels within the degree programmes in Medicine and Medicine with Industrial Specialisation. The Assistant Professor is expected to contribute to courses relevant to genetics and molecular biology, and to supervise projects at the different semesters. Teaching at Aalborg University is based on principles of problem-based and project-based learning, and documented experience with, or strong motivation for, this pedagogical approach will be viewed positively. As most teaching activities are conducted in Danish, proficiency in Danish is considered an advantage; however, candidates who are not fluent in Danish at the time of appointment are expected to acquire the necessary language skills within a reasonable period.

Tenure-track assistant professors are offered employment for a six-year period during which they must acquire qualifications at the associate professor level. At the end of the period, the assistant professor transfers to employment as an associate professor, following positive assessment. Promotion to associate professor is thus based solely on the staff member's own results and not on competition with other candidates.

As a tenure track assistant professor you are expected to conduct research (50%) and teaching (50%). Later, as an associate professor you are also expected to conduct both research (40%) and teaching (60%).

As a tenure track assistant professor you are expected to:

  • participate in drawing up your individual tenure-track career plan, including both research and teaching career goals, which should be followed
  • teaching: complete the course in university pedagogy for assistant professors
  • research: work on attracting external funding
  • non-native Danish speaker: learn Danish within the first few years of your employment to conduct teaching with support from HST

For the level of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, the following criteria will apply:

The candidate should have qualifications corresponding to an acquired Ph. D. degree. We expect that the candidate:

  • has published in peer-reviewed journals as the first author of the publication
  • has experience with applying for external funding for projects, equipment, travel costs, etc. maybe as main applicant (PI) or co-applicant (co-PI). This will be an advantage
  • should be able to carry out teaching, exams, and quality assurance - either independently or under supervision of a senior colleague
  • has experience with presentation of science, e.g., at conferences or in other relevant forums
  • has experience with sharing knowledge through an open science praxis. This will be an advantage
  • can work both independently and contribute positively to the teamwork in a research group
  • Assistant professor only: is able to conduct teaching and supervision in English or Danish. If the primary language is not Danish, the candidate is expected to learn Danish within the first few years of the employment

To be promoted to the level of ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, the following criteria will apply:

To achieve merit at associate professor level after 4-6 years as tenure track employee, we expect that the candidate will have experience with teaching, research or innovation, and knowledge dissemination. The candidate should be able to demonstrate significant contributions within ‘research or innovation’ or ‘teaching or education’. We expect that the candidate:

  • demonstrates a potential to establish an individual research profile and independent research area
  • can document significant contributions within his/her own research area or within innovation. This may be through data collection, data curation, programming, modelling, experiments, open science, development, cooperation with companies, or other activities which may result in publications, patents, receipt of external funding, or the like
  • has experience with applications for external funding as main applicant (PI) or co-applicant (co-PI)
  • has experience with national and/or international research cooperation or establishment of a network. This will be an advantage
  • should independently be able to carry out teaching, exams, and quality assurance
  • has experience with presentation of science, e.g., at conferences or in other relevant forums
  • has experience with sharing knowledge through an open science praxis. This will be an advantage
  • has experience with project management and teaching administration. This will be an advantage
  • has social and collegial competences the candidate able to interact with and contribute to a research group as well as the research and teaching environment at the department in a constructive manner
  • is able to conduct teaching and supervision in English or Danish. If the primary language is not Danish, the candidate is expected to learn Danish within the first few years of the employment

The following material must be submitted with the application:

  • A motivated text in which the reasons for applying for the position are described.
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD), pedagogical education, and continuing education (e.g., within research management). On request, you may be asked for an official English translation
  • References/recommendations
  • A presentation of your research area or interests and a description of your research plans (spanning 4-6 years)
  • A complete list of publications must be attached and a description of work that you find most relevant
  • An overview of your teaching experiences and a description of your most relevant contributions, please see guidelines for teaching portfolio at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, The Faculty of Engineering and Science and The Faculty of Medicine
