At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design at Aalborg University, the Department of Sustainability and Planning invites applications for an Assistant Professorship (3 years) in Responsible Technology Futures, with primary workplace at AAU Copenhagen. The position starts December 1st 2026 or soon hereafter.

We are seeking a candidate with expertise in Participatory Design, Engineering and/or Interdisciplinary Education for an Assistant Professorship, who can contribute to the Responsible Technology Futures research group work on concepts and methods to envision responsible futures in educating future engineers and the assessment and design of new technologies.

In the short term, the successful candidate will contribute to teaching, supervision, and examination in the existing Techno-Anthropology education (primarily at the Master level) and contribute to the SUNDTEK project, a continuing education initiative focused on health technology, digital transformation, and professional practice. In the mid-term, the candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of new educational initiatives related to Responsible Technology Futures and be engaged in the securing of external funding for research, including EU funding instruments, research project development, academic collaboration, public and private-sector partnerships. 

The department was established in 1975 and is now located at harbour-front campuses in Aalborg and Copenhagen. Across the two cities, the department has more than 250 employees and approximately 1,200 students across the two cities.

Our research and study programmes are rooted in sustainability and the green transition. This means we conduct research in areas such as the circular economy, technology, urban, energy, and environmental planning, as well as sustainable transition and design. Sustainability is central to our work in environmental assessment and marine management. In surveying and land use, sustainability is reflected in our efforts in nature restoration and climate adaptation.

As society continues to develop digitally, we also focus on responsible technology development, addressing real-life challenges. Our problem-oriented approach and close collaboration with businesses and public organizations form the foundation of all our study programmes. Additionally, our engineering programmes are among the best in Europe.

Job description
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to research, teaching, supervision, educational development, external collaboration, and academic administration within Responsible Technology Futures. The candidate is expected to fulfill most of the following requirements:

  • Have a PhD in Participatory Design, Engineering and/or Interdisciplinary Education, or closely related fields (essential requirement)
  • Willingness to work across AAU campuses while primary work location is Copenhagen (CPH & AAL)
  • A research profile in Participatory Design, Design Education, Engineering Education, with a link to Responsible Technology Futures (essential requirement)
  • Experience in applying for (essential requirement) and obtaining external research funding
  • Experience in disseminating academic work in conferences and through policy briefs (essential requirement)
  • Experience in publishing and reviewing academic work in journals and books (essential requirement)
  • Experience in research project management and work package coordination
  • Experience in developing educational initiatives, preferably in the Danish or similar educational contexts
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining academic and non-academic partnerships
  • Experience in problem-based teaching and supervision of semester projects
  • Experience in supervising Master thesis and PhD students
  • Experience in researching and teaching in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Experience in autonomously handling academic administrative responsibilities
  • Relevant industrial experience will be considered as an asset
  • Knowledge of Danish or one of the Scandinavian languages is a preferential title but not a requirement

Qualification requirements 
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Salary and terms of employment

Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement) (only in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (only in Danish). 

There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
