Professor (20%) in Microbial Ecology

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience a part time position as Professor (20%) in Microbial Ecology is open for appointment from 01.01.2019 or soon hereafter. The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching within Biotechnology, Biology & Environmental Science, and Chemistry, one section in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The position is located within the Section of Biotechnology in Aalborg.

Job description

The Department wants to strengthen its research in microbial ecology in collaboration with colleagues at Center for Microbial Communities, Section of Biotechnology and other relevant departments and research groups across Aalborg University including Faculty of Medicine.

The appointed professor is expected to contribute to research at the highest international level with focus on microbial ecology of uncultured microorganisms from natural and engineered systems. Special focus is the development, combination and application of single cell and various meta-omics techniques in various microbial ecosystems.

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience hosts three sections at the Aalborg campus, within chemistry, biology and biotechnology. The Section for Biotechnology houses state of the art equipment for protein production in bacteria, for secondary metabolites from fungi, bacteria and plants, molecular biology, biophysical characterization including NMR spectroscopy, MALS, DLS, ITC, MST, and mass spectrometry, and several platforms for next generation sequencing. Imaging platforms counts Raman micro-spectroscopy, LDM and CLSM.

The appointed professor is expected to supervise and mentor young researchers alone or in collaboration with colleagues from the department. Teaching may take part within the Study Programs for Biotechnology, Chemistry and Biology at graduate and postgraduate levels. Subject areas will include microbiology and biotechnology.

The successful candidate must have a track record of outstanding scientific research, scholarly achievement, external funding and teaching experience.

Qualification requirements:
The successful applicant can demonstrate a documented high level of original scientific production at an international level, including proven further development of the research area in question. An assessment of the candidate’s undertaking of research management and/or other possible management functions will also be taken into account. In addition the applicant is expected to have the qualifications required for undertaking teaching responsibilities. Special contributions to and development of educational and teaching related areas will be considered in the overall assessment.

Appointment and salary acc. to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of professional Associations (AC) on Academics in the State. Employment as Professor is in accordance with a classified position on scale 37. In addition, a pensionable increment will be given.
