Postdoc Marine Governance: A critical analysis of the EU Blue Growth agenda

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, Center for Blue Governance a position as Postdoc in Marine Governance is open for appointment from 1 February 2019 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 1.5 years. The Department of Planning conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international as well as administrative dimensions.

Job description

The postdoc candidate will be located in Aalborg, Denmark. Internally within the University, the position is based in the Centre for Blue Governance. The aim of the Center is to contribute to an in depth understanding of marine governance structures and processes at sea and in coastal areas and to design and develop (integrated) governance arrangements to govern marine activities and to control their consequences.

This post-doc project has a twofold objective (management and research related). First, the postdoc will contribute to the development and consolidation of the Center of Blue Governance, by initiating and developing research networks (within and outside Aalborg University) and developing marine governance research applications. Second, the post doc will develop his/her own research project, with a focus on a critical analysis of the development and implementation of the EU Blue Growth agenda in countries, by maritime activities and at regional seas. To make use of the oceans’ full economic potential, the European Union (EU) has adopted a Blue Growth strategy, which focuses on five innovative, high-potential maritime sectors (blue energy, aquaculture, coastal and maritime tourism, blue biotechnology and seabed mining). The EU Blue Growth strategy heralds a paradigm shift with a strong emphasis on economic opportunities and growth at the level of the regional seas. This postdoc project will perform a critical analysis about the tension between economic development and sustainability. What is the relation between the Blue growth agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDG14)? How does the economic development of maritime sectors affect marine and coastal communities? The project will examine how to mobilise partnerships between maritime industries, academia and public authorities to identify sustainable (regional) solutions.

The candidate should be a person with the following qualifications:

  • Is a motivated researcher, holding a PhD in political science, public administration, sociology, political ecology or a related (marine) social scientific discipline;
  • Expertise and knowledge of ocean and/or marine governance;
  • You are an independent researcher
  • You are able to collaborate with other researchers and to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Experience with attracting and working on externally funded research projects;
  • Exemplary English language (oral and written communication) skills.

Limited teaching within the area can be expected, but also in other study programmes at the University.
