At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production a position as postdoc in Mechanical Engineering is open for appointment from 1st of March 2019 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 3 years. Department of Materials and Production (MP) is wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials' applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production, and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups, which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators, several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Job description

Research activity will be developed in the framework of the European project entitled “Understanding of the Physics of Wind Turbine and Rotor Dynamics through an Integrated Simulation Framework” (763990 — UPWARDS), in which Aalborg University is an active partner. In particular, Aalborg University’s pursuit in this project is focused on the development of progressive material damage models and simulation tools for static and fatigue-driven damage development in structures made of laminated composite materials in order to evaluate their structural performance and integrity. The project was initiated on the 1st of April 2018 and it has a duration of 48 months.

In this context, the tasks assigned to this Postdoc researcher position, to be employed on the UPWARDS project, are related to the development of a 3D progressive fatigue delamination model based on the current state-of-the-art 2D model by Aalborg University. In addition, it is sought to increase the application of these developments in the design process of advanced laminated composite by implementing the model in a commercial simulation framework. The simulation tool will be validated by comparing computational and experimental tests of a wind turbine blade demonstrator specimen loaded by representative operating loads. To this end, an experimental campaign to obtain the material card that feeds the simulation method will be needed.

For all the aforementioned, applicants should hold documented skills in finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, cohesive zone modelling, experimental fracture mechanics, programming, fatigue analysis and composite materials. The applicant’s published contributions on numerical tools that can be included in the process of extending the current state-of-the-art 2D model by Aalborg University into 3D applications will be positively considered. This includes numerical features of a crack front tracking algorithm and mode-decomposed energy release rates evaluation in 3D cohesive interfaces. Moreover, experience in the characterization of interlaminar properties, especially under fatigue loading, is an important requirement. In general terms, the development process of numerical prediction tools including the benchmarking with experimental tests on validator specimens is an important background for the position. Collaboration in other relevant research projects or activities will be also taken into account. In addition, the knowledge on the current state-of-the-art developments by Aalborg University, as well as the familiarization and participation so far on the project in progress, will give a clear advantage with respect to other candidates. Good skills in oral and written English are required. Limited teaching within the area can be expected, but also in other study programs at the University.

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
