Associate Professor in Transitions in Coastal Communities

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Department of Planning, Aalborg University, a position for five years as Associate Professor in Transitions in Coastal Communities is open for appointment from September 1 2019 or soon hereafter. The Department of Planning (PLAN) conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international as well as administrative dimensions. The Associate Professor will be located in the city of Aalborg, Denmark. Internally within the University, the position will be linked to the Research Center IFM – Centre for Blue Governance. IFM – Centre for Blue Governance undertakes social scientific research within fisheries, marine governance, and the development of coastal communities and regions, both internationally and nationally. IFM – Centre for Blue Governance collaborates cross-disciplinarily in the department in order to develop sustainable solutions.

Job description

The Associate Professor will do research within coastal communities. The successful applicant will have a proven track-record and documented experience in this area such that he/she can contribute to the continued development of the research centre’s position as one of the leading research centres investigating the social, cultural and political transitions taking place in coastal communities. The position will especially have a strong focus on understanding the transitions and peripherality of coastal communities in relation to maritime activities. This may include transition from exclusive fisheries dependence or on seafood products to diversified livelihoods combining production and amenities, but is also adaptation, transformation, and innovation processes in coastal communities in general. 

The associate professor will have teaching responsibilities within the programmes Techno-anthropology and Geography, but also in other study programmes at the University. The applicants should document research interests and teaching portfolio relevant to these disciplines. Some of the teaching will be in Danish

The work place of the position is in Aalborg. 

Qualifications:

  • Having a Ph.D. degree in a relevant social scientific discipline, such as maritime anthropology and planning.
  • Demonstrated research interest and experience in transitions in coastal communities.
  • International publication record comprising publications within the academic field of the position.
  • Possessing experience in cross-disciplinary and community-oriented research.
  • Possessing an active network and relationships with national and international institutions working with transitions in coastal communities.
  • Experience in teaching after the PBL (Problem Based Learning) methods.

Qualification requirements: 

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.

  • Teaching qualifications described in the teaching portfolio.  If this is not enclosed the applicant must include an explanation for its absence.
  • Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations and the like.
  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position.
  • References/recommendations.
  • Personal data.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
