PhD Stipend in Ecology and ecophysiology of uncultured microbes in anaerobic digesters (18-19029)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, one or more PhD Stipends are available within the research programme of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 July 2019 or soon hereafter.

Job description

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science. The PhD position is located within the Section of Biotechnology at Center for Microbial Communities with working place in Aalborg, Denmark.

The Center has approx. 40 young scientists working with structure and function of microbial communities, primarily related to environmental biotechnology. The Center has state of the art equipment for DNA sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, and advanced microscopy. The PhD position is part of ongoing research in full-scale anaerobic digesters in order to understand the ecophysiology and ecology of the uncultured majority. Special focus is on elucidating factors controlling community composition and activity in full-scale digesters and the methods includes time amplicon sequencing, series analyses, and statistical analyses. The project includes close contact to Danish wastewater treatment plants that includes communication in Danish.

We seek a young scientist with strong background in anaerobic digester microbiology and experience with amplicon sequencing and bioinformatics.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
