Professor in Exoskeletons and Assistive Robotics

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production (MP), a position as Professor in Exoskeletons and Assistive Robotics is open for appointment from 1st of February 2020 or soon thereafter. Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Thereby, as an employee at the Department you will become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Job description

The professor will be the leader of a research group within exoskeletons and assistive robotics and will be responsible for the continued development of the group. The activities of the group encompasses fundamental aspects of assistive robotics, with a special research focus on design, development and applications of exoskeletons and other advanced robotic systems, involving research topics covering physical human-robot interaction, novel mechanisms, robot design modelling and optimization, sensing, actuation and control of human-centered robotic systems, and the increasing applications of exoskeletons.

The department has selected exoskeleton technology as one of strategic areas of research and development. It is the expectation of the department that the professor will drive the research group to extend its current standings and activities in exoskeleton research and applications. This includes research and development within modelling and optimum design of exoskeletons and other assistive robotic systems. It is expected that research activities will include novel sensing, actuation and control technology to build smart, intelligent exoskeleton systems to enhance their capability of physical assistance and perception.

The professor is expected to promote multi-disciplinary collaboration across research groups, departments and faculties within the university and also with other universities and organizations. It is the ambition of the department to further increase its current international high standings within the area of exoskeleton technologies. The professor is also expected to interact with Aalborg U Robotics, a platform for collaborative research and teaching activities (www.robotics.aau.dk).

The professor is expected to prove a track record in scientific fundraising at national and EU levels, industrial cooperation and innovations in exploiting research results, which is sufficient to justify the above-mentioned ambitions for the development of the research group.

Teaching will primarily be in the BSc/MSc study programs in Mechanical Engineering and in robotics, including PhD-supervision/-courses and external courses.

You may obtain further information about the position from Department Head, Prof. Kjeld Pedersen, phone: +45 9940 9220.
