PhD Stipend in Reliability-oriented design of a microgrid system (14-19070)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a Ph.D. stipend is available within the general study program Energy Technology. The stipend is open for appointment from March 1, 2020, or soon hereafter. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, and Electrical Machines) to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 300 employees – out of them are more than 125 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The Ph.D. stipend is a part of a research grant on REliable Power Electronic based Power System (REPEPS) from the Villum Foundation Investigator programme running from 2017 to 2023, which is awarded to Professor Frede Blaabjerg. The position is further related to the research program Efficient and Reliable Power Electronics and the Ph.D. student will be positioned to the section for Power Electronic Systems.

Job description

The overall goal is to develop new methods for ensuring reliable and safe operations of power electronic based power systems. An integrated reliability assessment tool, which can incorporate both the physical characteristics of hardware components and control software optimization at the system level, will be developed for predicting the lifetime of power electronic based power systems. New insights into the mutual interactions of power electronic converters at multiple time scales will be revealed to leverage the control effects of power electronics for power grid stabilization and protection. It is expected that between 15 to 25 researchers will be involved in REPEPS and the research environment will be very international oriented. 

Power electronics converters are dominating the power systems with a high-level integration of renewable energies, like wind and solar photovoltaics. In such applications, reliability and efficiency are of importance, which can affect the cost of energy. When multiple power electronic converters are connected to the point of the common coupling, possible interactions among them including influence of different thermal stressors depending on the system mission profile lead to component failures and may cause converter outage and eventually the entire system shutdown. Many attempts have been made to improve reliability of individual power converter reliability utilizing design for reliability concepts. However, in multi-converter-based systems such as in a microgrid, analyzing the system-level impact of mission profiles, employed architectures, adopted control strategies and interactions among converters are required to ensure the system-level reliability. This Ph.D. project thus focuses on the reliability-oriented design of a microgrid system. The major objective is to develop design methodologies to directly control and maintain “reliability” of power electronic-based power systems. The developed design methodologies and control strategies should be validated through experimental tests. 

Application Requirements:
Applicants should be highly motivated with the background in power electronics, modeling and control of electrical energy systems. Hardware experience with power electronics systems will be an advantage. A high proficiency in oral and written English is required. The application for enrolment must include the following:

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
