Professor in Intelligent Control of the Power Distribution System

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as Professor in Intelligent Control of the Power Distribution System is open for appointment from 01-01-2020 or soon hereafter. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 230 employees – out of them are more than 100 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The position is offered in relation to the research program "Intelligent energy systems and active networks" and the professor will be positioned to the section for Electric Power Systems.

Job description

The position requires research qualifications at Doctor level within the field of intelligent control of the future power distribution systems especially related to the integration of small renewable energy generation units and use of demand side management of flexible loads, and the interaction to the thermal, transport and gas distribution systems. This includes the overall planning of distribution network grid taking market influence and forecast methods into account. Such planning is necessary to meet the demands of tomorrow related to multi energy systems and connection of i.e. large offshore wind farms, PV-systems and house-hold renewable devices, active loads and the management of transmission and distribution power flow originating from market demands and taking capacity limits into account. Major specific research areas for the future intelligent power grid include: analysis, modeling and simulation plus measurement techniques for a solid verification of results, protection issues for MV and LV distribution network grid, interaction between the electrical, transport and thermal or gas distribution systems. Denmark has a leading position regarding a future intelligent grid including integration of dispersed generation and use of demand side management and the professor position has the main purpose of keeping Denmark at the forefront of this development.

Teaching will primarily be in power systems with main focus on advanced power system analysis at medium and low voltage level, but also in other study programmes at the University. It is further expected that the professor will take part in the administration of studies why experiences with this is also preferred.
