Assistant professorship

<p>At the Department of Culture and Learning, The Faculty of Humanities, Aalborg University, an Assistant Professor of American and Media Studies is available as of 1<sup>st</sup> February 2020. This is 4-year full-time fixed-term position that includes both research and teaching activities.</p>

Job description

For appointment as an Assistant Professor, the successful candidate is expected to:

  • teach, supervise and examine students in relevant modules in bachelor's and master's degree programmes in English as well as other programmes in the department, when relevant
  • conduct research and publish research products at a high quality level in recognised venues
  • participate in external research networks and partnerships, and in doing so create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of different research and cultural backgrounds
  • engage in knowledge collaboration related to the position's scientific portfolio
  • contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the overall activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Learning

Appointment as an Assistant Professor requires academic qualifications at the PhD level, including an approved PhD thesis.


In relation to research, the applicant is expected to document:

  • experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to deliver high-quality research
  • a research plan that harmonizes with the strategy of the Department of Culture and Learning and shows the applicant's plans for developing new research products and projects.
  • a strong profile in contextualist readings of popular audiovisual narratives in relation to American culture. This profile should be combined with an insight into contemporary American history and historical theory
  • the ability to link media studies with contemporary history in future research.


In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document:

  • experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to provide high-level instruction within the area of the English programme, with various pedagogical considerations and approaches, including supervision, conducting seminars, lectures etc.
  • at Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore considered an advantage, but is not a prerequisite.
  • teaching qualifications and experience in one or more of the following areas: Media analysis, American history, media history, and related fields such as American literature.
  • teaching experience in other areas of the programmes mentioned above.


The applicant is expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in Danish. Alternatively, the successful applicant is expected to acquire relevant linguistic competence within an agreed timeframe.


In addition, as teaching, supervision and examination activities are conducted in English in the English programmes at Aalborg University, applicants must master English at a high academic level. Applicants must also be able to supervise and assess written and oral presentation as well as English proficiency. Experience with teaching English as a foreign language is considered helpful for the position, but not mandatory.


The position is primarily affiliated with the research group Interdisciplinary Media Studies that has a range of research interests within the following main areas:


  • the role of the media in a global and medialised society
  • film and TV media, digital media
  • the interplay between media texts across platforms


In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have strong cooperative abilities as well as the ability to create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. A national as well as an international network is thus an advantage.

Daily attendance in the Department is required. In addition, applicants must be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Department and study programmes. Assistant professorship
A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark). 

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

  • A complete publication list with a clear indication of the attached publications to be taken into consideration in connection with the assessment. Applicants for the assistant professorship must attach no more than five publications, and applicants for the associate professorship must attach no more than ten publications.

  • Copies of your degree certificates (including Master’s and PhD certificates) 
  • A clear indication of whether you are applying for the assistant professorship or the associate professorship.  

Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee. Applicants may be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.
