PhD Stipend in Metal-Organic Framework Glass Science (18-19083)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Section of Chemistry a PhD stipend (3 years) is available within the PhD programme Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 January 2020 or soon thereafter.

Job description

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Biology & Environmental Science, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The position is located within the section of Chemistry with working place in Aalborg.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an extensive class of crystalline materials with ultrahigh porosity and enormous internal surface areas. Recently, some of MOFs were found to be good glass formers. However, the detailed picture of the local structure of the MOF glasses is still lacking, and this makes understanding of MOF glass formation rather challenging. The PhD project aims at directly detecting the structure in several representative melt-quenched MOF glasses at both the short range (8 Å) and the intermediate range (8 to 20 Å) length scales. It will also involve exploration of the impact of the chemical tuning on the MOF glass structure. The project will be carried out by using several advanced characterization tools. The structural information gained from this project will be utilized to uncover the MOF glass formation mechanism.

Applicants for this PhD position should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or similar. Interest and experiences in glass science or metal-organic frameworks as well as in the analysis of glass structure will be considered as an advantage. Excellent skills in oral and written English are required. The candidate must submit the application including CV, list of publications (if available), and official examination certificates (including academic transcripts).

You may obtain further information from Professor Yuanzheng Yue (phone: +45 3053 2430, e-mail: yy@bio.aau.dk) concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
