One or more Assistant Professors in Industrial Design

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Architecture, Design & Media Technology, one or more Assistant Professor positions are available at the Section for Industrial Design. The positions are open from May 1st 2020 or soon thereafter and for a period of three years. The Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology's goal is the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrate creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology, and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

Job description

The main focus in the Industrial Design Section is in the early phases of the innovation using a systematic, methodological and integrated design process to create new products and solutions. Integrated design is the integration of design, engineering and business aspects into a synthesised proposal. This includes research in design theories, models and methods for creating a shared point of departure and development process for work of cross-disciplinary teams. The emphasis in the process is from the search phase until synthesis of a conceptual proposal, with an outset in wicked, ill-defined problems, challenges and opportunities within product and service development. Challenges that can be addressed using a Design Driven approach on several levels; ranging from concrete idea and product development, process and project management to strategic and business levels.

We are looking for one or more Assistant professor with a research interest and possibly practical experience in one of the following fields:

1. Materials in Integrated Design
With an outset in engineering, we wish to strengthen integration of design-oriented aspects and engineering-oriented aspects regarding the use of materials in product design, construction and development. The role, use and capabilities of existing and emerging materials and technologies in Product design are not limited to technical engineering aspects such as construction and manufacturing processes. Understanding potentials and limitations of materials and manufacturing technologies can provide new opportunities in the conceptualisation of new products. A more holistic integrated design-engineering approach to materials goes beyond the technical construction and manufacturing aspects, the environmental impact and financial costs: it integrates e.g. CFM and the user-experience and expression of materials in the product design. Improving the integration of these aspects in product development through an integrated design process requires new insights and knowledge across traditional paradigms.

2. Form and Meaning of Products
Giving form to products is essential in an Industrial Design discipline, the product aesthetics and the meaning incorporated in the product are of great importance and yet difficult to master. We wish to strengthen and expand the skills and competencies in the field of giving form in an integrated design process. This includes increasing our methodological understanding of giving form to a product as a synthesis activity, how to actively utilise e.g. product semantics to integrate socio-cultural meaning in the product’s desired expression. Methods, tools and techniques to systematically explore how to give form through e.g. curvature, surfaces, textures and volumes and the perception of the product aesthetics, meaning and emotional response it evokes. There is a need for improving the methodological understanding of giving form as part of an integrated design process so the detailed concrete form giving is aligned with the desired expression, materials, construction, manufacturing and strategic identity of the product.

Applicants are expected to indicate which research field they wish to apply within. This shall include a brief description of the applicant’s vision, aspiration and direction for research within the chosen field.
Applicants are encouraged to outline any experience with concrete product development through design and/or engineering disciplines.

Teaching activities include lecturing, supervision, coordination and planning at bachelor and master level. Predominantly Industrial Design and occasionally teaching design in other programs such as Interaction Design, Entrepreneurial Engineering and Service Design.

Proficiency in English is a requirement. Proficiency in Danish is an advantage but not a prerequisite. However, as courses at the bachelor level are offered in Danish, we expect that you become capable of teaching in Danish after a few years.

You may obtain further professional information from Associate Professor Christian Tollestrup, tel. +45 9940 9915 or mail cht@create.aau.dk
