PhD Stipend in Assessment of microplastics in stormwater (6-20007)

At the Facualty of Engineering and Science, Department of The Built Environment a PhD stipend is available within the general research programme Civil Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 May 2020 or soon hereafter.

Job description

The focus of this PhD position is to assess microplastics in urban stormwater with focus on biochar and bark filters as road-side green filters for microplastics removal. The idea is to use these filters to primarily remove microplastics and other environmental pollutants from stormwater and also to sequester carbon and function as green areas (when planted).

The work is part of a larger project where the main focus of the PhD student is identification and quantification of microplastics in stormwater. Uppsala City, Sweden, will be used as an arena for assessment of the microplastics.

Microplastics will be identified and quantified in surface runoff from different types of urban catchments, serving different functions, e.g. residential areas, parks, car parking lots, low and intensive traffic areas, city center, commercial areas and industrial areas. Surface runoff and pristine snow in the different areas will be sampled during various seasons. Differences in microplastics particle sizes, shapes and polymeric composition, together with variations between the study areas, will be also determined.

The analytical methods applied to study the phenomena are micro-FTIR imaging and pyrolysis GC-MS. The work will be conducted partly in controlled lab experiments and partly on full-scale filters.

The successful candidate must document knowledge on technologies for management of urban polluted waters and have experience with microplastic sampling and identification applying state-of-the-art analytical methods.

The candidate must document practical experience with working in an environmental laboratory. Applicants for the PhD position must hold a relevant Master's Degree related to Environmental Engineering. A good command of oral and written English is also required.

You may obtain further information from Professor Jes Vollertsen, Department of The Built Environmant: phone number: +45 9940 8504, email: jv@civil.aau.dk concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
