May 2020 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 2 years. BUILD is part of University of Aalborg and has more than 250 employees spanning Aalborg and Copenhagen.Climate change, urbanization, resource scarcity, population development and global migration pose major societal challenges in which research within the areas of civil engineering and the built environment play a crucial role. BUILD addresses these challenges. BUILD is rooted in the field of engineering, complemented by elements from the social sciences and humanities. This academic breadth is a strength since it offers the opportunity to research, advise and educate with a holistic approach to solving the complex problems within urbanization, housing, construction and civil engineering.

Job description

The Urban Water Research Group is offering a postdoc within hydrological modelling of the urban water cycle.

Understanding interdependency between drainage system, river system and groundwater in urban areas is important in order to minimize water pollution and flood risk in cities. Due to urbanization and climate change, the spare capacity of urban waterways will decrease in the future and thus increase failure risks.

In order to get a better fundamental understanding of this interdependency, the postdoc project should develop and implement monitoring campaigns and develop numerical models that can simulate the complete urban hydrological cycle. Combined with rainfall forecasting, a real-time monitoring and warning system should be developed and tested. Furthermore, impacts of climate changes should be considered.

The postdoc will primarily work on the project GRAVA (In Danish: Samspil mellem GRundvand, Afløbssystem og VAndløb i byer), but also on other projects related to urban hydrological monitoring and modelling. In addition to the research, the applicant is expected to undertake teaching and supervision obligations at bachelor and master level within civil engineering, water and environmental engineering and physical geography.

The candidate is expected to have:

  • A PhD degree within civil or environmental engineering, hydrology or similar.
  • Strong competences within programming, model development as well as commercial software for hydrological modelling.
  • Experience with hydrological field measurements and sensor development.
  • Knowledge on data analysis and statistics
  • Competences within web-interfaces and on-line visualization of results.
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of students.

The applicant should along with the application, write a short project description and ideas for pursuing the research described above.

You may obtain further professional information from Associate Professor Søren Thorndahl, st@civil.aau.dk.
