At the Department of Culture and Learning, Aalborg University, Campus Copenhagen an assistant professor position is available as of 1 July 2020. This is a 3-year full-time fixed-term position that includes both research and teaching activities.

Job description

For appointment as an assistant professor, the ideal candidate is expected to:

  • Teach, supervise and examine students in bachelor's and master's degree programmes in Learning and Change Processes including subjects concerning intercultural and cultural perspectives, internationalization, pedagogical practices, and organisational learning processes in institutions and organization.
  • Conduct research and publish research products at a high quality level in recognised venues
  • Participate in external research networks and partnerships, and in doing so create and maintain productive relationships with researchers across disciplines and with social and cultural backgrounds
  • Engage in knowledge collaboration related to the position's scientific portfolio
  • Contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the overall activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Learning and actively participate in a research group/centre, more specifically Centre for Education Policy Research (CfU).

Appointment as an assistant professor requires academic qualifications at the PhD level, including an approved PhD thesis.

In relation to research, the applicant is expected to document:

  • Experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to deliver high-quality research
  • A research plan that harmonizes with the Department of Culture and Learnings strategy and the profile of Centre for Education Policy Research and shows the applicant's plans for developing new research products and projects.
  • Experience with research-informed interactions with society and communities

In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document:

  • Experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to provide high-level instruction within the area of the learning- and education studies programme, with various pedagogical considerations and approaches, including supervision, conducting seminars, lectures etc.
  • At Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore considered an advantage, but is not a prerequisite.
  • Experience with developing teaching and supervision in intercultural contexts

The applicant is expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in Danish. Alternatively, the ideal applicant is expected to acquire relevant linguistic competence within an agreed timeframe. The applicant is from the outset expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in English.

The position is affiliated with the research group Centre for Education Policy Research https://www.cfu.learning.aau.dk/ , an interdisciplinary research centre based on approaches from sociology, ethnography, history, cultural- and critical race studies and curriculum studies, specializing in the studies of education policies and politics on macro-, meso- and micro-level.

The assistant professor is expected to have a strong profile in empirical and theoretical research in two or more of the following areas: 

  • Intercultural educational strategies in institutions and organizations
  • Internationalization of education in institutions and organizations
  • Education in light of globalization, localisation and hybridization processes
  • Racialization and/or discrimination and anti-discriminatory-strategies and policies in educational institutions and organizations

Short listing will be applied and among positively assessed candidate, selected applicants will be invited for a presentation and interview.

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have solid cooperative abilities as well as the ability to create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. A national as well as an international network is thus an advantage.

Daily attendance in the department is required. In addition, applicants must be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the department and study programmes. Assistant professorship
A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark). 

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

  • A complete publication list and markings of the attached publications to be taken into consideration in connection with the assessment. No more than five publications may be attached.
  • In case you attach joint, a co-author statement must be enclosed specifying your contribution to the joint work. The co-author statement must be signed by at least one of the co-authors. Template co-author declaration

  • Copies of your degree certificates (including Master’s and PhD certificates) 

Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee. Applicants may be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.

This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
