Research Assistant in Indoor Health Impacts (2020-224-02825)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) at Aalborg University’s campus in Copenhagen a position as Research Assistant in Indoor Health Impacts is open for appointment for a period of two years from  June 1st, 2020 or soon hereafter.

Job description

The department of Energy Performance, Indoor Environment and Sustainability at BUILD conducts research in the areas Indoor climate, human requirements in buildings, prevention of mould growth, energy efficient buildings, ventilation, lighting and environmental impact of construction and operation of buildings.

The research assistant will be working in the research group “Indoor Health Impacts”. The research group focus on indoor air pollution by fungal growth, PCB and other plasticizers, flame retardants, pesticides, formaldehyde, preservatives, and the spreading of contagious diseases. Furthermore, the group investigates ventilation and the impact of everyday user behavior.

The research assistant will be working on collecting and analyzing data from Danish building maintenance staff and refining the results into tools that may assist operation and maintenance staff in their efforts together with occupants to prevent mould growth in residential rental properties. The tools may comprise flyers for hand out, internet content, instructional videos, sensors, cloud computing of information from sensors and heating and ventilation systems and other communicative or strategic tools.

The candidate will develop specifications for future efficient tools to reduce problems with mould growth and moisture in rental properties.

Finally, the candidate will teach about problems and solutions in relation to collaboration between building occupants and maintenance and operation staff in order to prevent mould growth, will participate in other ongoing research projects and contribute to the development of new research proposals.

Aalborg University is looking for a talented candidate with a background in IT and communication supplemented with qualifications within architecture and building physics.

Qualification requirements:
Candidates should have the ability to work in a team as well as independently and be good at networking. The candidates must have knowledge of English (written and spoken) for assessing international scientific findings and communication with international researchers and excellent knowledge of Danish language for making web content, oral presentations and counselling people seeking advice in relation to humid buildings and fungal growth targeted at the Danish social and rental housing.

Furthermore, the right candidate:

  • Holds a relevant master degree
  • Has knowledge on prevention of mould and moisture problems in buildings
  • Has knowledge and skills within scientific communication for diverse audiences, both laymen, practitioners and academics
  • Experience with design and usability of websites
  • Has knowledge concerning visual communication and skills within graphics
  • Has skills within qualitative methods for research and interaction design

It is also an advantage if the candidate has a keen interest in helping people to achieve healthy homes by timely building maintenance, good everyday behavior and fruitful collaboration with maintenance and operations staff.

The required level of qualifications is at master level.

Reappointment may be made, but a Research Assistant can only be appointed to Research Assistant for a period of maximum three years. Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
