Postdoc in Mission-Critical Wireless Communications

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in mission-critical wireless communications is open for appointment from September 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 24 months. In the area of electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 staff, of which about 40% are international, and about 90 enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. Department research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, signal processing, cyber security and acoustics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results in practical applications with industrial partners and through IPR. Within its subject field, the Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model..

Job description

Mission-critical communications are currently in the focus of the academic and industrial research and development. Of particular importance are mission-critical wireless solutions for first responders (e.g., firefighters, coastguard and mountain rescue teams) that can provide a timely, reliable and automatized information exchange among the team members, as well as between the team members and the command center. 

The postdoc project will focus on research, design and development of wireless solutions facilitating mission-critical communications for first responders. The work will include, but is not limited to: (i) assessment of the current systems for mission-critical communications, like LTE- and TETRA-based ones, as well as of the emerging 5G approaches, (ii) proposal of the enhancements and development directions for novel solutions with an increasing level of autonomy and robustness, and (iii) design, development and prototyping of cellular and ad-hoc networking solutions. The emphasis of the work will be on algorithms, methods and protocols on layer 2 and the higher layers of the protocol stack, which rely on the candidate radio-interfaces.

A prospective candidate should be capable of autonomously conducting research in the above areas, have excellent analytical skills and an attitude towards practical implementation.

The position is hosted at by Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University, campus in Copenhagen, and funded by H2020 SIXTHSENSE “Smart integrated extreme environment health monitor with sensory feedback for enhanced situation awareness” project.

The successful candidate should have:

  • A PhD degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering or similar.
  • Strong background in wireless communications. Strong mathematical skills. Background in MATLAB, C++ (or similar) and embedded programming, as well as background in programming software defined radios and wireless modules are highly desirable.
  • Relevant publications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as presentation skills.
  • Highly proficient English language skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, creative, innovative, independent thinker.
  • Motivation to collaborate in an interdisciplinary international team.

 Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
