Postdoc in microplastics in aquatic systems (2020-224-03085)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment. a position as Postdoc in the Division of Marine and Environmental Engineering is open for appointment from 1. January 2021 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 2 years. The Division of Marine and Environmental Engineering conducts research and teaching in marine and environmental engineering, water pollution, hydrology, and physical geography. The position is opened in the research group of Microplastics, a group that today consists of 3 tenure staff, 4 postdocs, 11 PhD students, 1 lab technician and a handful of master students.

Job description

The research is on microplastics in aquatic systems, covering the study of microplastics in water and sediments of marine as well as freshwater systems. An important part of the research is the improvement of analytical methods for microplastics extraction from complex matrixes such as muddy sediments. Another part is on further developing the subsequent analysis of the extracted particles applying µFTIR imaging, targeting plastics down to a few micrometers in size. It is important that the applicant has experience with microplastics analysis under clean and controlled conditions as well as experience on interpreting data obtained by µFTIR imaging.

We have a modern and well-equipped chemical lab for various environmental studies. The equipment we use for microplastic analysis is Agilent’s flagship for micro‐FTIR imaging, two 620 FTIR microscopes combined with Cary 670 FTIR spectrometers, equipped with 128x128 pixel FPAs. We furthermore have a Frontier Lab pyrolyzer coupled to a GC-MS, a Renishaw Raman and a wide suit of supporting equipment.

Qualification requirements
The candidate must hold a relevant PhD-degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, or related fields. The candidate should document knowledge in the field of microplastic analysis in environmental matrices and down to the low µm scale. It is a benefit if the candidate has experience with multivariate analysis targeted big datasets, and programming skills applied for analytical purposes.

The applicant must have good interpersonal and communication skills, as the project is carried out in a well-balanced work environment and in close collaboration with many different stakeholders.
