PhD Stipend in Safe Machine Learning (8-21031)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a PhD stipend in Safe machine learning is available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from August 1, 2021, or soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

Introduction
Machine learning forges its way into many spheres of human activity from education, medical and legal supporting systems to autonomous vehicles. It is capable of classifying objects, trends, and patterns in a huge amount of data. Nonetheless, the control and monitoring solutions for critical infrastructures stay reluctant to this new trend due to high safety standards. To this end, we propose to merge stochastic safety with reinforcement learning. The learning intrinsically makes use of trials and exploration of new situations. Nonetheless, these new unknown situations may become unsafe points with no return.

Swift Project
The position is a part of Swift Project gathering doctoral and postdoctoral researchers around the subject of machine learning, multi-objective optimization, safety, security and privacy preserving algorithms.

Tasks
We will develop the theory of safety focusing on mathematical characterizations and numerical approximation methods for the associated safety function and safety measure. Specifically, we will identify the set of initial states from which the probability of reaching an unsafe region (before reaching the desired target) is small enough.

We will consider model-driven optimal control based on dynamic programming. We will introduce stochastic barrier certificates in dynamic programming. This work will pave the way for solutions in data-driven optimization methods. We will use these results for safe dynamic programming to equip Reinforcement Learning with a barrier certificate.

We will verify the applicability of the theoretical results derived in a newly built water network laboratory at Aalborg University, https://vbn.aau.dk/da/equipments/smart-water-infrastructures-laboratory-swil

You may obtain further information from Professor Rafal Wisniewski, Department of Electronic Systems, email: raf@es.aau.dk , concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Lisbeth Diinhoff , The Doctoral School at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design, email: ld@adm.aau.dk , phone: +45 9940 9589.

Aalborg University uses an electronic recruitment system for receiving applications. Towards the bottom in the respective job advertisement you will find a link, which you need to use when applying for the position. Before uploading your application it is important that you have all relevant documentation ready in a Word or PDF format, as you need to upload all material at the same time. You cannot leave the application and return to it a couple of hours later without having to start over.

The system does not support ZIP or images files. Filenames can only contain numbers and letters, and each document must take up no more than 20 MB.

If you experience technical problems, we encourage you to try again. If the technical problems, contrary to expectation, cannot be solved, please contact the member of staff listed as the contact person in the job advertisement.
