2021-224-03553 Postdoc in Learning Factories and Digital learning tools

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production (Section of Production) a Postdoc position is available from August 2021 or soon thereafter. The position is availible for a period of 2 years and weekly working hours are 29,6. Department of Materials and Production (MP) has a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials' applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups, which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technology, and industrial management and innovation. As an employee at the Department of Materials and Production you will become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building and interdisciplinary collaborations The Postdoc position is part of a strategic collaboration with University College of Northern Denmark (UCN) in the area of Learning Factories and Digital Learning tools, and supported by the Manufacturing Academy of Denmark (MADE)

Job description

Research environments, industrial companies and teaching institutions are all establishing experimental learning facilities in and around their manufacturing facilities in order to demonstrate elements of solutions to the future of manufacturing, which we often refer to as industry 4.0.

While many of these initiatives have been technology-focused, the intended aim of the Postdoc position is to supply systemic solutions, which will give rise to important discussions about governance, connectivity, competencies, value creation and linking these to the emergence of technological opportunities. In this context, it is increasingly recognized that the future of manufacturing rests on the need to combine human and machine intelligence and capability. The concept of the learning factory is well-established in manufacturing theory and practice and engineering education, but key problems remains to be addressed:

  1. In engineering education/further education, one-off learning experiences are not sufficient due to the need for scalability. At the same time, we recognize that standardized learning opportunities do not create sufficient leeway for the wicked problems we face in modern manufacturing. The use of digital learning tools (e.g. gaming and/or simulation in the virtual factory, use of AR/VR etc.) may facilitate scale-learnings, that allows both expansive and efficiency-seeking learning, but the learning foundations for these digital learning tools are ill understood and have not been subjected to academic study.
  2. Learning concepts are needed that build the foundation for combining explorative and exploitative learning in the context of learning factories. Structured learning concepts are needed to transition from laboratory production to full scale and scalable production, setting the structural conditions for learning (continuous improvement and innovation) in the space of automated production and supply chain.

These and further questions will be the focal point of the research effort in this Postdoc position.

As a successful applicant you will participate in education, academic and collaborative research activities in the group and with external partners. The research covered by the position will be within the core of the research group and the applicant’s profile should therefore address several of the areas. We are looking for highly motivated candidates with qualifications in one or preferably more of the following areas:

  • Learning Factories
  • Digital learning tools (e.g. AR/VR)
  • Digital transformation of companies
  • Previous experience with experimental research within manufacturing companies will be considered an advantage.
  • Preferably experience in design of educational activities relative to manufacturing.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and international environment as an independent researcher.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in Danish and English.
  • Commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and ability to work efficiently both as a part of a team and independently.

We offer

  • Access to a state-of-the-art research laboratory equipped with a variety of mobile robots, collaborative robotic platforms, industrial robotic arms, drones, cyber-physical modules, exoskeletons, and numerous cameras and relevant equipment for experiments.
  • Multi-disciplinary and international environment
  • A chance to see your research brought into practice.
  • Strong engagement with industry.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Casual working environment.
You may obtain further information from Head of Section/Associate Professor Astrid Heidemann Lassen ( concerning the scientific aspects of the scholarship.
