Postdoc in Electrochemically Assisted Microbial CO2 Reduction (2021-224-03525)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a position as Postdoc to investigate electrochemical induced carbon capture in microorganisms, is open for appointment from 01.09.2021 – 30.09.2023 or soon hereafter. The position is located within the Section of Biotechnology with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The Post Doc project is an interdisciplinary high-risk high-gain project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. It is related to development and proof-of-concept demonstration of a highly efficient combined electrochemical/microbial CO2 reduction that follows a completely new concept. Through the application of advanced molecular techniques it is the aim to study how electrochemical stimulation of the enzymatic pathways related to carbon capture. The research group collaborates with external partners in a mission driven development of new energy technology for the green transition.

The candidate will be applying combinations of metagenomics and proteomics in combinations with isotopes (C13-labelled substrates) for the study of induced carbon capture activity in complex microbial samples with the aim to study the involved enzymology.

You are expected to have practical experience with microbial processes and advanced molecular biology (combining metagenomics and metaproteomics) and work with isotopes. Experiences with analytical methods for the degradation of recalcitrant compounds and good skills in scientific dissemination of results are an advantage.

Limited teaching within the area can be expected.

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Biology & Environmental Science. Moreover, one section is located in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one section is situated in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. You will be collaborating with other members of the Functional Ecology group under the supervision by Professor Jeppe Lund Nielsen.

Competences of the successful applicant:

  • Hold an outstanding Master degree in Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering or in a relevant program
  • Research experience in microbial processes
  • Experience with genomics and proteomics
  • Complex problem solving skills and critical thinking
  • Ability to work in an international team
  • Inter- and multidisciplinary thinking
  • Highly motivated
  • Ability to conduct work in a structured and systematic manner and with a sufficient degree of independence
