At the Department of Culture and Learning, Aalborg University - campus Aalborg, a professor position is available as of December 1st. 2021 or shortly thereafter. This is a permanent full-time position that includes research, teaching and research management.

Job description

The position is in the area of democracy related to international relations, political and social change with a special focus on Spanish and Latin American relations. The required field of knowledge regards the role of civil society in furthering a new social and political order and its implications for democratic transformations. The position covers a variety of topics ranging from the analysis of social mobilizations and solidarity of movements to the study of transnational connections, the relationship between civil society and political actors, discourses and institutions, and current phenomena such as populism.

For appointment as a professor, the ideal candidate is expected to:

  • teach, supervise and examine students in relevant modules in bachelor's and master's degree programmes in SIS-Spanish, Language and International Studies, Culture, Communication and Globalization, and Latin America Area specialization, at the highest international level
  • supervise PhD students at the highest international level
  • conduct research and publish research products at a high quality level in internationally recognised venues
  • handle research management of researchers with different research and cultural backgrounds
  • coordinate and participate in external research networks and partnerships, and obtain external funds of strategic importance
  • initiate and develop knowledge collaboration related to the position's scientific portfolio
  • contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the overall activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Learning.

In terms of research, the position includes research at an international level within the field of democracy and social change including a focus on Spanish and Latin American relations and politics, and applicants are expected to have comprehensive research experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • social movements, transnational solidarity and civil society
  • discourse analysis and social change
  • populism, nationalism and democracy.

In relation to research, the applicant is expected to document:

  • experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to produce research of the highest international quality
  • a research plan that harmonizes with the Department of Culture and Learning’s strategy and shows the applicant's plans for developing new research products and projects
  • experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to initiate and develop external (national and international) partnerships
  • experience with obtaining external funds of strategic importance
  • experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the applicant's ability to engage in relevant research partnerships.

In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document:

  • experience in the management and development of study programmes
  • experience, competences and achievements demonstrating the ability to provide the highest-level instruction within the area of the SIS-Spanish, Culture, Communication and Globalization programs, and Latin America Area specialization, with various pedagogical considerations and approaches, including supervision, conducting seminars, lectures etc.
  • ability to teach in Spanish would be preferred
  • experience in supervising of PhD students
  • at Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore preferred, but is not a prerequisite.

The applicant is expected to document the ability to teach, supervise and assess both written and oral presentations in Danish. Alternatively, the ideal applicant is expected to acquire relevant linguistic competence within an agreed timeframe.

The position is primarily affiliated with the research group Democracy, Migration & Society (DEMOS) that has a range of research interests within the following main areas:

  • participation, transformations and collective identities
  • democracy and rights in their contemporary and historical context
  • migration, mobility and diversity

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have solid cooperative abilities as well as the ability to create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. A national as well as an international network is thus preferred.

Daily attendance in the department is required. In addition, applicants should be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the department and study programmes.

The position of professor is a permanent position with obligation to research, teaching and publication/academic dissemination.

Applicants to the professorship are required to provide documentation of a substantial amount of original scientific production at international level, and documentation of significant contribution to the development of the research area in question. It is equally important that applicants are able to undertake research management or other kinds of management, pedagogical counselling and supervision as well as academic assessment tasks.

All candidates will be assessed by an assessment committee. Applicants may subsequently be summoned to an interview and/or trial lecture.

When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
