At the Department of Culture and Learning, Aalborg University, Campus Aalborg, a vacant position as Assistant Professor in Tourism, is available from February 1st. 2022 or as soon as possible after this date. This is a 3- year full time position that includes both research and teaching activities. The work will complement and extend the existing expertise within the Culture and Consumption Research Group.

Job description

The ideal applicant will teach primarily on the Tourism MA and degree programme at the Aalborg Campus. At Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with PBL is therefore desirable but is not a prerequisite. The ideal applicant will be expected to encourage active learning and enhance the employability of our students, as well as contributing to the development of the MA programme. All teaching and supervision on the Tourism MA is conducted in English.

The ideal applicant will have a research profile within the area of tourism consumption, market communication or innovation in tourism. We particularly welcome candidates whose research addresses issues related to digital technologies and/ or sustainable tourism.

In terms of personal qualities, the ideal applicant will have solid cooperative abilities, and the ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. Daily attendance in the department is required. In addition, applicants should be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the department and study programmes.

Applicants for the post of assistant professor must hold a PhD degree or academic qualifications at PhD level. In the selection of candidates, emphasis will be placed on research potential and pedagogical qualifications as well as teaching experience.

The ideal applicant will be expected to: 

  • deliver high quality teaching, project supervision and associated examination as required across the range of modules offered on the Tourism MA programme
  • coordinate the modules ‘Key Issues in Tourism Consumption’ and ‘Innovation in Tourism’
  • conduct research and publish research outputs of an internationally recognized quality in the areas of tourism consumption, innovation in tourism and/or market communication in tourism
  • participate in external research networks and collaborations
  • engage with external stakeholders to enhance the cultural, social, environmental and/ or economic impacts of their research and/ or teaching
  • contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the day-to-day activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Learning and the Culture and Consumption Research Group.

 In relation to research, applicants should document:

  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to produce high quality research outputs and publish in international journals
  • a personal research and publication plan which is consistent with the strategy of the Department of Culture and Learning, and demonstrates the potential to attract external funding and produce high quality research outputs
  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate participation in, and the ability to further develop, external and/ or international networks and collaborations
  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to engage in activities with stakeholders outside academia to enhance the impact of research

 In relation to teaching, applicants should document:

  • experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability to deliver high quality teaching on the Tourism MA programme, using a range of pedagogical approaches including problem-based learning, project supervision, group work, interactive seminars and lectures
  • their ability to teach and assess written assignments and oral presentations in English.

In relation to general competences, applicants should also: 

  • document experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to work collaboratively with colleagues, participate fully in the day-to-day activities of the Department and Research Group, and encourage a positive and friendly working environment
  • demonstrate good communication skills.

Assistant professorship
A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution (a maximum of six years at assistant professor level at AAU and a maximum of eight years at assistant professor level in Denmark). 

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

  • A complete publication list and markings of the attached publications to be taken into consideration in connection with the assessment. No more than five publications may be attached.
  • In case you attach joint, a co-author statement must be enclosed specifying your contribution to the joint work. The co-author statement must be signed by at least one of the co-authors. Template co-author declaration

  • Copies of your degree certificates (including Master’s and PhD certificates) 

Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee. Applicants may be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.

This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
