PHD stipend in Rural Technology Innovation (7-21082)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, Aalborg University, a 3-year PhD stipend is available within the study program of Media, Architecture & Design. The PhD Stipend will be situated at Aalborg University. The position is available from November, 1 2021 or soonest thereafter. The Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrates creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

Job description

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate to carry out research of appropriating green energy technologies in partnership with rural communities in Namibia. The candidate will have a work appointment in the human-machine-interaction group at the Aalborg University campus in Aalborg. The candidate will contribute to a larger EU project whose overall aim is to demonstrate, replicate and innovate novel green technologies in a series of different African countries and contexts.

The candidate will work alongside Namibia University of Science and Technology to deploy technology innovations in rural areas in Namibia to understand the impact and barriers to green technology in marginalized contexts, focusing on local appropriation and how these technologies might connect communities to the other national sectors. The candidate will primarily collaborate with environments (university, business, and rural environments) in Namibia, but linking to other African countries with similar objectives is envisioned.

The position provides a top-level opportunity to personally impact the green energy transition in Africa and engage with first-hand innovation within environments that will significantly enhance personal networks and personal impact through interdisciplinary research activities.

The following competencies are appreciated.

The candidate preferably has an inclusive mindset to technology re-design, thereby interested in working within collaborative environments.

The candidate should optimally have experience within start-up environments, more established business environments, or interest in it.

The candidate should demonstrate experience working with technology in marginalized communities in either Namibia or similar contexts or express clear interest for it.

The candidate must demonstrate an independent and self-driven profile.

The candidate should have a technical background (Computer Science or similar is preferred).

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
