At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment at Aalborg University’s campus in Aalborg a position as Assistant Professor in Coastal Engineering is open for appointment from 01.02.2022 or soon hereafter and for a period of 4 years. This is a parttime position (30 hours a week). The Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) focuses on the technical and scientific disciplines within the built environment. Research areas span from Indoor Environment and Energy Efficient buildings, Wind Turbines, Structural Design, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Wave Energy to Traffic along with many other areas. The research is conducted in a national as well as an international research environment. The department takes on contract research for both public institutions and private companies. Job description

Research areas will be within coastal engineering. Teaching will be mainly in Civil and Structural Engineering, but also other programs at the university.

The position is opened in the Ocean and Coastal Engineering Research Group, a group that today consists of 5 tenure staff, 2 postdocs, 1 PhD student, 2 lab technicians and a handful of master students. The research group conduct research within the field of ocean waves and hydrodynamic modelling, with particular focus on marine renewables and coastal structures. The research is primarily carried out through externally funded collaborative projects, involving both private and public organizations. The group has a modern and well-equipped laboratory including a wave basin and a wave flume.

The research areas for the position will be within maritime structures, in specific primarily within coastal structures such as breakwaters and wind turbines. The main research area will be experimental and numerical testing of the hydrodynamic response of such structures. Coastal structures are often exposed to depth limited wave conditions, and thus waves are highly nonlinear and thus correct generation and analysis hereof put high demands on the methodologies used in the physical (and numerical) model. The applicant might thus also contribute to further development of our state-of-the-art wave generation and analysis software packages AwaSys and WaveLab.

We thus look for an applicant with research focus in experimental and numerical modelling of coastal structures and especially within breakwaters and offshore wind turbines. Experience in shallow water waves and generation and analysis hereof will be positively evaluated. The applicant must also be expected to be involved with several coastal engineering consultancy projects carried out in our laboratory and thus experience herewith will also be positively evaluated.
