Postdoc in Sound and Music Computing

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, Aalborg University, Copenhagen campus, a post doc position is open for appointment for a 2-year period from February 1, 2022 or soonest thereafter. The Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research, which integrate creativity, engineering, and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology, and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user. The Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology (Copenhagen section), conducts research in Multimodal Interaction and Virtual Reality, Lighting Design, Service Design, and Sound and Music Computing, with applications in entertainment, health and rehabilitation among many others.

Job description

The postdoc position is linked to the Nordic Sound and Music Computing University Hub (NordicSMC), which brings together a group of internationally leading Sound and Music Computing researchers from all five Nordic countries: Denmark (Aalborg University), Finland (Aalto University), Sweden (KTH Royal Institute of Technology), Iceland (University of Iceland), and Norway (University of Oslo). NordicSMC aims to consolidate and strengthen the international research profile of these partners in the field of Sound and Music Computing. The network covers the field of Sound and Music from the soft to the hard, including the arts and humanities, the social and natural sciences as well as engineering, and with a high level of technological competency.

The postdoc project will be interdisciplinary, and focus on the use of music as a form of augmented feedback for rehabilitation: For instance the design of evolving generative musical stimuli (e.g. using existing physical models for sound synthesis) to serve as augmented feedback in training settings. The appointed candidate will be granted full access to the facilities of the Multimedia Experience Lab and Augmented Cognition Lab. It is expected the candidate will work on an independent project supervised by Prof. Stefania Serafin and Assoc. Prof. Sofia Dahl. The appointed candidate will benefit from the combined expertise within the NordicSMC network.

Applicants should hold competences within one or more research areas relevant to augmented music feedback. These areas include musicology; machine learning: physical sound models; sonic interaction design; virtual and augmented reality; haptic and/or augmented feedback. A PhD degree within Sound and Music or equivalent would be an advantage. The appointed candidate will be expected to divide their time into approximate 75% research and 25% teaching activities. Teaching duties will include course teaching and/or project supervision in the fields for machine learning for media technology and programming in the Medialogy (B.Sc. and M.Sc) and/or Sound and Music Computing (M.Sc) programs.

  • A PhD in Sound and Music Computing, computer science, systematic musicology, signal processing, human movement science, or similarly related fields that offer a solid foundation for further research into the area of augmented musical feedback for rehabilitation.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:

  • The applicant's estimated academic and personal ability to complete the proposed project within the time frame
  • The applicant's ability to complete the project
  • Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities
  • The project's scientific merits, research-related relevance and innovation

You are welcome to submit a short "project description" (2-5 pages), outlining research within the topics mentioned above. This project description should include: one or more research questions, a study design including methods and theories for the research project as well as a time schedule.

We encourage interested applicants to direct any questions about the position to Prof. Stefania Serafin:
