Job description

ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP
An appointment as associate professor is a permanent appointment which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To some extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University.

Applicants for the associate professorship are required to possess research qualifications at such a level as can be attained through the successful completion of a term of employment as assistant professor, researcher, postdoc or other similar positions. Applicants must document research at an international level. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.

ASSISTANT PROFESSORSHIP
A position as assistant professor is a fixed-term training position which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities (include lecturing, supervision, coordination and programme planning). To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organised by the University.

The employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution.

The successful candidate to both positions is expected to:
  • Teach, supervise and examine students primarily at the Master of Criminology programme (www. kriminologi.samf.aau.dk/) but possibly also at other programmes at the department, when relevant.
  • Conduct criminological research and publish research products at a high quality level in recognised venues.
  • Participate in external research networks and partnerships, and in doing so create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of different research and cultural backgrounds.
  • Contribute to the strengthening of the criminological research environment at the Department.
  • Contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the overall activities and working environment of the Department.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities wishes to ensure that assistant professorships provide career opportunities both within and outside of the university. For that reason, assistant professorships are formed in a manner ensuring that the competencies achieved in the position qualify for a career within research as well as a career in the private and/or public sector. No later than one year before the termination of the position, you are offered an interview in order to clarify your further career.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
It is presupposed that applicants for the position as associate professor have research qualifications corresponding to the level achieved from a successful employment period as an assistant professor/researcher, or achieved otherwise. The applicants must document scientific production at an international level. Furthermore, it is presupposed that the applicants have received supervision and pedagogical upgrading and a positive written evaluation of their teaching qualifications. Moreover it will be an advantage, but not a prerequisite, that applicants have experience with Problem Based Learning (PBL) which is Aalborg University's teaching philosophy.

Applicants for the assistant professorship are required to possess academic qualifications; for example a PhD degree or similar academic qualifications.

For both positions supervision of students will be conducted in Danish. A successful candidate who is not already proficient in a Scandinavian language is expected to acquire proficiency in Danish within the first two years of employment at the level required to carry out common duties in education. There are several opportunities to receive language tuition.

Assessment
An assessment committee will assess all candidates.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not. The selected applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that applies to the applicant in question. When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics. Workplace is in Aalborg.
