At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production, a postdoc position is available in the period from August 1, 2022, or soon hereafter. The position is available for 2 years. Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials' applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Thereby, as an employee at the Department you will become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building and interdisciplinary collaborations.  The physical location of this position is at the Aalborg East Campus of Aalborg University and is formally tied to the Mass Customization research group.

Job description

The postdoc will be working with reconfigurable and changeable manufacturing systems primarily on the REKON project, which aims to extend research results on responsive and cost-efficient production systems design from earlier projects and to disseminate the knowledge to Danish industry through extensive teaching and project activities.

The purpose of the REKON project is to facilitate development of production systems in Danish companies to achieve higher changeability and thereby higher resilience against uncertain market conditions, including changing customer needs, shorter product life cycles, and lower product costs. The project will achieve this through the development of a method and associated tools, which will have a significant practitioner-orientation while being grounded in scientific research methods and results. These developed artifacts will assist Danish companies to reduce time-to-market, capital investments in production equipment, development lead time; increase re-use of production equipment and processes; and increase capacity utilization of production systems and equipment. The acquired knowledge of solutions will support companies to achieve shorter product life cycles, increased product variety and production flexibility.

Besides the postdoc, the project team consists of four other researchers from the Mass Customization group, including the project coordinator Associate Professor Thomas D. Brunø. Besides AAU, external project partners from research institutions in Denmark and Sweden take part in the project.

The project offers great freedom and autonomy in terms of research directions within the broader topics of changeable and reconfigurable manufacturing. Scientific dissemination is expected to focus on subject relevant journals and conferences while practitioner-oriented dissemination is carried out as part of the REKON project’s dissemination activities, including seminars and industry projects.

The REKON project is funded by Industriens Fond, and more information about the project can be found here: read more.

The ideal applicant holds, or is close to obtaining, a PhD degree closely related to changeable and reconfigurable manufacturing systems. Proficiency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Experience in industry dissemination of scientific topics is strongly preferred.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Associate Professor Thomas D. Brunø, Department of Materials and Production, e-mail:, regarding the scientific aspects of the position.
