PhD Stipend in Visual Thinking for Service Systems Design (7-22047)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology, Aalborg University Copenhagen, a 3-year PhD stipend is available within the study program of Media, Architecture & Design. The PhD Stipend will be situated at the Aalborg University Copenhagen campus with mandatory visits to the campus in Aalborg. The position is available from September 1, 2022 or soonest thereafter. The Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology has as its goal the development of an innovative cluster of engineering-based environments for education and research which integrates creativity, engineering and technology within the disciplines of architecture, urban design, industrial design, digital design and interactive media. The department is a leading research and educational environment in Denmark that addresses the challenge of the interplay between creativity and technology and develops new areas in research and education directed towards the end-user.

Job description

The PhD Stipend is partly funded by the T-factor project – Participatory Futures. Co-creating cities with temporary urbanism (  with the purpose of applying visual thinking as a way to conduct a participatory design inquiry, explore and represent complex (urban) systems.

The overall theme of the stipend is that of visual thinking in participatory processes in service systems design. The purpose of the PhD is to create research-based knowledge about theories and methods on how visual thinking can be used to support broader participation across urban and service design processes. The intention is to explore novel designerly ways to more collaboratively envision, describe and explain how complex systems and related services work. The PhD should explore such theoretical and methodological aspects through a case study setting (exploring how visual thinking can be applied in an urban environment undergoing societal change).

The PhD will be based at the Service Design Lab (SSD Lab) at Aalborg University, Copenhagen. In order to make sure that the PhD candidate receives all the possible support from the SSD Lab, the PhD candidate is expected to work mostly in presence.

Qualification requirements:

- A master's degree in Service Design or similarly related fields. 

- Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:

- The applicant's estimated academic and personal ability to complete the proposed project within the time frame

- The applicant's ability to complete the research training

- Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities

- The project's scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation

We prioritize applicants who submit a short "project description" (2-5 pages), which is a suggestion for a PhD project within the theme mentioned above. This project description should include: one or more research questions, a study design including methods and theories for the research project and a time schedule. Applicants can also enclose recommendation letters if they wish to do so.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
