At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in GaN MMIC Power Amplifiers for K-band Satellite Systems is open for appointment from September 1st 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 12 months. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

Satellite communication systems, such as the low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations, have evolved to accommodate high capacity, data rates and flexible area coverage expected in emerging applications. Enabling technologies such as beam steerable antennas and spectral efficient modulation schemes (e.g. OFDM) are adopted to fulfill the desired performance specifications. This further leads to the high linearity requirement on the power amplifiers in the system in order to handle the high peak-to-average power ratio presented by the spectral efficient signals.

Doherty Power Amplifiers (DPA) have the proven capability to operate efficiently, often combined with digital pre-distortion techniques, in the base-stations of terrestrial mobile networks. However, the stringent requirements on power efficiency, thermal management, dimension and weight in the satellites are preventing the use of commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) DPA products for satellite systems. Therefore, the remarkably growing LEO satellite service has called for efforts in the implementation of DPAs for space systems.

This position is part of our plan to build and expand our chip design activities and you are expected to bring in new and complementary expertise to the team.

You will work on the characterization of GaN devices and the implementation of DPAs in the form of MMICs. The special focus is on the application of LEO satellites and the corresponding specification requirements will be followed. You should have extensive knowledge in RF and microwave circuits and systems, as well as experience in the design, modeling, and measurement of solid state power amplifiers. Knowledge and experience on analogy and digital linearization techniques would be an advantage. You are expected to hold a relevant Doctoral Degree within electronics and have proven publication records in high ranking journals.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
